i was a lil kid in the early hippie days but my dad was really conservative so hippies weren't around our house. none of my siblings were hippies. i never knew a single hippy personally during the early days.
as an adult, i got to know a lot of people who said they were hippies, but for most of them, their lives didnt seem to demonstrate the hippy - lifestyle was present anymore!
ironically, the people who influenced me most until i was in my late 20s were christian (typically methodist). now i'm not that either! ha! but they had a similar outlook on life, peace is worth working toward, the earth is our home so live wisely, etc. a sunday school teacher back then was especially influential toward my beliefs, even still today. she walked the walk. sounds like your art teacher was the same. cool.
