Character Name: Devra

Age: 18 Turns

Gender: Female

Sexual Orientation: Devra is a little unclear on this. Why, are you interested?

Craft/Rank: Dolphineering Apprentice

History: From the moment Devra was born, it was well known that her destiny, whatever it might be, would have something to do with the sea. In fact, Devi was born out at sea, as her mother was in a ship bound for Malvren when she went into labour. She took her first lung full of salt air, and let out a healthy squall. Her father, a fishcrafter, took this as a very good sign. Her mother took it as her cue to faint, a cue which she promptly took. Ahh, but there was trouble ahead! With the ship rollicking about in the storm, they very nearly lost their way... and would have, if not for a pod of dolphins.

Since the day that the dolphins, and their accompanying dolphineers, guided the ship into a safe harbor, little Devra was told that she owed her life to the sea and to the creatures that lived in it. And that was just fine with Devi. She was fascinated, thrilled by dolphins. Her fascination and excitement over the sea going mammals only grew as the Turns went by, until the day she became an apprentice dolphineer. Though she has yet to receive a bondmate of her own, Devra has spent the past five Turns swimming with the others.

Her parents are proud enough of her chosen craft, and somewhere along the way, she was presented with a baby brother. This, in Devra’s opinion, is all to the good. One day that son will probably be a fishcrafter like his father, and that will be just fine as far as she’s concerned. Maybe he’ll even be Searched one day, and Impress to a dragon! It would be the first time in living memory, in their family. She’s been rather thankful that dragons seem to have little interest in her, because she shares about the same regard. Dragons are for other people. Dolphins are for Devi.

Description: At first glance, Devra is composed mostly of a sharp, strong nose, and a pair of honey brown eyes. Her features are otherwise small and mostly well formed. Nothing spectacular, mind. She won’t be winning any beauty pageants (assuming Pern ever held any), but she carries herself well. Generally, Devi puts that up to her long hours in the ocean. Swim well, walk well. The theory doesn’t really quite work, but it’ll do in a pinch. She’s slender, and lithe, and just about everything you might expect from someone who spends as much time in the water as a would be dolphineer. She’s also as brown as a nut, and proud of that fact. Her brunette hair is worn in a braid or a ponytail down her back, and she’s got a beauty mark beneath and to the side of her right eye.

Personality: Devra is... energy. High energy. She absolutely has to be moving, and thinking. While she’s ordinarily fairly easy going and mellow, if she spends a lot of time cooped up her temper slowly begins to fray. Keeping her closeted up inside is both incredibly difficult and inclined to bring out the worst in her. She’s got a glib, clever tongue, and when it’s unleashed on an object of her ire, it can be as sharp as they come. She has an unfortunate habit of bottling irritation, so that when it finally slips free, she just explodes.

It can be truly startling, especially if you don’t know her well, and she is a bit indiscriminate about who is being burned in the process. At that point, expect a swift combustion. However, once that temper has petered out, she’s back to her usual self-- what, are you still upset about that? Silly! Haven’t you already moved past that? Devra has. After all, she has something else to focus on. And focus, and focus, and focus.

If Devra is sweet on you, expect to know about it. She is not subtle, and is very willing to simply throw herself at her object of affection. She’s probably built up some expectation for how that person will respond, and when it falls short of the mark, well... that’s their loss, isn’t it? Devi is very comfortable in her own skin, and I do mean just in her skin. She has little regard for the discomfort of hidebound people, or those who have simply been a bit sheltered.

She’s got a big heart, and is very happy to share it with whomever she pleases or whosoever desires it. That applies to both friends and lovers, new and old. There is room in Pern for every kind, after all. An unfortunate side effect of this attitude is that she has little regard for authority, as that very authority is currently on her list of ‘people who need to be befriended’. It’s rather annoying, because she tends to take only those who are immediately above her seriously. If you don’t spend your time in the water, she probably won’t give you the time of day for chores, for example.

... She also likes to hoard things.

Other: Uuuuhhh, let’s see. She has a small collection of sea shells kicking around somewhere. Actually, it is a pretty large collection, and one that grows almost every day. It’s not fast growing, but it is the work of Turns. She swears she can hear the ocean in one of them, and wears another one on a leather thong around her neck.
