I'm certain that all of you have at least a vague understanding of the 2012 prophecy -- that, on the date of December 21, AD 2012 (12/21/12), the 'world as we know it' will come to an end.
This is traditionally taken to refer to an apocalypse (an apocalypse; I figure there's probably a difference between an apocalypse, such as the one that kicked the dinosaurs' collective asses, and the Apocalypse, which probably won't get to happenin' until the sun swells up real good and starts eatin' planets), although it is also often read as a harbinger of spiritual evolution, technological wonderment (how many people use that word anymore, by the way?), or total crap.

Personally, I believe that this prophecy refers directly to the Day of Lavos, upon which the titular giant, parasitic, demon extraterrestrial hedgehog will emerge from the very earth and spew forth flames (and asteroids!) to lay the world of men to waste.

As such, it is my intention to form an Anti-Lavos party prior to this date. I would also suggest that you guys do the same -- after all, we have no way of knowing where Lavos might show up.

Personally, I think 2012 is a load of bullshit. Yes, I think about it often and I am VERY afraid of dying but I don't think it's going to be an apocalypse.
I've seen a few interviews with actual Aztec/Mayan/whatever culture it's supposed to originate from/etc people and holders of culture who say that they've never ever read anything about an apocalypse or anything about 2012. All it is is their calendar is ending. So what? Get a new one.
Another theory I've heard that I kind of like is that something that will bring about change will happen on that day. It doesn't have to be some end of the world event, but it could be something more calm. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

But yea, there will be no end of ze world. Not this soon anyways.

It's impossible for me to know for sure, simply due to the fact that I don't know how to manipulate time. I currently travel into the future at a rate of exactly one second per second. As such, I couldn't say for sure what will or won't happen. Personally, I think it's pretty much a load of crap, but I suppose it could become a self-fulfilling prophecy in the sense that enough freaked-out or hopeless people acting rashly can cause a significant difference in the world structure over a 24-hour time span. I don't think we'll undergo any major changes (assuming my Anti-Lavos party manages to kill the beast before it causes too much damage), but I think it'd be a good day to stay indoors, and if that's not possible, to avoid people.

The most dangerous adversary this world has ever birthed are those who feel they have no reason to continue living, and if you're convinced that you're going to die in a few hours, chances are you're not too concerned with the repurcussion of your actions.

I think, as it gets closer to December 21 of that year, it's going to get progressively harder to shove your way into a grocery store. People will probably be stocking up.

The significance is that on that day, some old god will complete some cycle I can't remember that lasts somewhere in the tens of thousands of years, which will apparently fundamentally alter our world in some way.

Personally, I just think it's funny how a self-proclaimed 'technological society' is freaking out over a pretty ambiguous prophetic prediction made by a civilation that was pretty much suckerpunched out of existence. I'm not sure I'm so keen to put my faith in their precognitive ability, myself.
