The Lost Island refers to an island, just north of Alaska, where the demon tool "Brew" was located, for over 800 years prior to the beginning of the series. It was previously a settlement for numerous witches, featuring a large construction facility for demon tools, but an accident annihilated the entire facility and it's population along with it.
The accident resulted in the creation of a large magnetic field, especially rich in demonic power, in the center of the island. The conditions of this environment mean no human can venture inside without tremendous risk to their life. If anyone were to stay within the area for a period of greater than 20 minutes they would begin to distingrate, as their bodies are slowly destroyed. The raging exterior of the field concealed not only the true location of Brew but also an imprint of the events ocuring just before the accident.
This imprint provides a unique insight into over 800 years past revealing it to be a serene paradise and sanctuary, in stark contrast to its present condition as a snow covered and desolate wasteland.
The island itself plays a pivotal role within the series, as it is the location where a significant battle occured between the forces of Shibusen and Arachnophobia over the possession of Brew. Almost everyone is involved in the fight, yet the task of entering the field and retriving Brew is left to Stein and Marie. However; when the pair don't return out of the field as promised, Kid, Black Star and Maka, with their weapons go in after them. It is after this that Shinigami's presence is displayed just mere moments before the incident took place, due to the observations of the events of the imprint. This leads to the group's assumption that the accident was a direct consequence of Shinigami's actions but it is revealed that they have been lured into this conclusion, similar to how Shinigami was lured to the area so long ago. This devious plot had be concocted by Arachne, in order to conceal any remnants connecting herself and the island to "Brew", through initiating a large enough explosion to destroy any evidence without rendering the demon tool useless.
