Who: Zurine and Toshiaki
Where: The seaside near Phiel's home
When: Late night
Weather: Clear, cool, and windy

Though she was pretty sure Phiel would not understand and would in fact be quite furious with her, it had become a habit of Zurine's to very carefully, and very quietly, slink out of the house when she was very sure her guardian was asleep. It was not as if it was difficult. The man slept like the dead after a job, and Zurine occasionally startled him even when he was very much awake with her quietness. So, he seemed not to even notice it when she slipped out of the front door, quiet as a churchmouse.

The moonlight and the wash of the sea always made her restless at night, but once she was out in it, it was almost soothing, a tonic to soothe away the ills and the stresses of the day. The cool, silvery light and the chill salt breeze pushing back her pale blue hair made her feel right at home, and being alone was comforting, invigorating. Sometimes she would hunt the crabs scuttling around in the sand, or just chase the surf, and she would creep in in the early grey hours of the morning to nestle back down in what passed for her bed.

Tonight was different, though. Something else was on the wind, and it was deeply concerning...

It had seemed a fantastical sort of idea at the time, the sort of thing that in the enthusiasm of youth and the surety with which the young assume their own correctness, could not possibly go awry. Not a few days before, Wit had taken Toshiaki and Shadow out to the seaside to frolic...an outing that had included a bag of chocolate-covered coffee beans for the Raevan, and a satisfying lunch for guardian and significant other. The excursion had left such an impression on the kitsune, that he couldn't understand why he shouldn't revisit the sea. It had been beautifully fascinating the first time, and he'd dipped fingers into the waves, cooing in utter fixation at the way they lapped over his limbs, seawater drenching his sleeves. His blond guardian had even allowed him to take several shells home as prizes. A shame that his nitwitted 'parent' had to be so childishly embarrassing.

Keenly aware of the other's irregular behavior, Toshiaki had decided that he was going to have his own trip to the seaside. The middle of the night was, naturally, the best time to enact his little plan, because Wit was either asleep or holed up in the library, and Dweian was long-since snoring in his own bedroom downstairs. So flitting out of a lower window, the fox-eared Frei had traveled through quiet, near-dead streets to the place where they had walked before... However, the combination of the odd hour, and the Raevan's natural condition caught up with him, and he felt himself drooping before he'd embarked halfway across the sands. Recognizing the signs by now, he whimpered softly, ears flattening against honey-gold locks.

Wit was going to punish him for this, and the Raevan was not looking forward to it, that the last thought as he succumbed to sleep, floating gently down onto the beach as though someone had dropped a feather...attempting, but failing dismally to get an arm beneath him before slumber claimed the coffee-scented male. It really was a curse, the sleep-spells....

It was an unlikely thing, a Raevan tripping over something. They lacked feet, for one thing, and yet it was a more metaphorical thing for Zurine as the scent of coffee reached her nose. She was drawn up quite short, wriggling and wrinkling the dainty pale nose. What in the world was that scent? Phiel smelled like that, sometimes, and the house always did first thing in the morning... It was a good smell, rich and warm and comforting. But why did the sea breezes blow it to her?

Further down the beach she found her answer -- her keen eyes, in the pale light of the moon, caught the sight of a small, soft-looking bundle curled up in the sand. Wasn't Zurine clever! Perhaps it was coffee, and perhaps Phiel would like it if she brought some home! Hastening along, she floated delicately over the dunes, and then when she had reached the fallen frei's side, Zurine drifted downward a bit, fluttering her wings slightly.

But it came as a surprise when the fragrant, coffee-scented heap was not in fact a bag of something, but a very small pile of... Raevan, like herself. Her lips parted in a curious O, and Zurine tilted her head. She had never met this stranger, but he was all by himself. And being all by oneself, especially sleeping -- and outdoors, no less -- was not the wisest of ideas, Phiel had managed to impress upon her. It was important to always know where one was. But it gave Zurine a chance to examine Toshiaki, and there was much that was curious about the kitsune Raevan.

Especially, Zurine found with delight, those cute, fuzzy, soft ears... Reaching out carefully, she softly traced fingers along them, giggling softly. While it was probably a bad thing for this stranger, she was enjoying herself very much at his expense.

There was a notable delay of a few seconds, but then, those ears wiggled 'neath the female's touch, the kitsune Raevan's nose wrinkling as he came to waking, slivers of amber visible under those thick coffee n'cream lashes. Oh! Coming rather abruptly to waking as the sound of Zurine's mirth caught his sensitive ears, he made a low, trilling noise, yawning as he reluctantly came from the pull of slumber. "'lloes..." He rumbled softly, regarding her with his strange eyes, slowly looking the lass up and down in a slow, deliberate fashion.

Ah, it seemed that he'd fallen asleep once more. Just the sort of thing that Wit had been prattling on about, the reasons why his ward couldn't venture on midnight escapades, and why had Toshiaki ignored him? Why for this very sort of thing, naturally, for tonight, a rather ethereal creature had come to awaken him, so how could he even dream of complaining? Not that he had any intention of informing his guardian, if the coffee-smelling being had his way, he would be back home and tucked in his room before anyone was the wiser...though he had the niggling suspicion that Dweian was altogether likely to note that Toshi had been naughty. The butler had something of a sixth sense, of that the Raevan was utterly convinced. It just wasn't fair.

Not wishing to pluck himself from the sands just yet, he merely smiled pleasantly at this new acquaintance. "Moonlight..." He murmured, almost burbling the words, as he allowed her to further fondle his ears, finding the touch altogether pleasing, "...moonlight is you." For the icy female seemed to glisten, quite the sight to behold as she appeared to his sight as a lunar goddess...striking on the backdrop of the sand and waves. Perhaps he was still dreaming, as this, after all, was a pretty enough setting for a frolic in the fantastical lands of slumber. That, mind, had once garnered him a rather exasperated talking-to by his guardian and Dwee, who had been concerned that Toshiaki had lost his grasp on reality, what still being a child and all, no matter that his features made him look far older, the twosome knew that he was still very much a youth.

When those ears had wiggled, Zurine paused, frozen still as a fountain in December, her dark eyes narrow and her pupils constricted to tiny points against the near-identical darkness of her irises. She did not want to seem like prey, and so her wings opened further, spread wide and shuddered with the fine, crystalline chime-and-tinkle of icy snow. The mellow, rich scent-taste of coffee almost coated her tongue, just from the scent clinging to her new companion. It was nice, though. Reminded her of Phiel, she tried to convince herself, and though she held herself perfectly still for a moment, when he smiled, she thawed to an extent, the fine and barely-perceptible tension in her slender shoulders easing them into a slightly more natural pose, graceful and thoughtless. "Ice," she provided softly, smiling in her own slow, slight way as she delicately toyed with the furred ears, fascinated with all that softness and letting her attention peter down into the stranger's hair.

"You are who? Soft, warm, sleepy. You smell of..." She paused, leaned in lower. "Coffee. Comforting. Also like me." The wind caught the edge of her ribbon, making it flutter softly out behind her. He'd been sleeping in the cool long enough that the heat of him didn't bother her, and she was grateful. It made touch and curious exploration easy, painless. Her chilly fingers traced the softness of his hair. She didn't often try to touch Phiel overmuch. He was too warm for her tastes, and her guardian didn't want to be touched anyway. At least Toshi didn't seem to be actively displeased with her curiosity.
