Two wolves padded side by side through the thick underbrush. They paid no mind to the foliage that swept across their fur, nor to the bugs that attempted to latch themselves onto the passersby. They were siblings, though one looking at them might not assume so at first; they had little in the way of similar coloring. It was perhaps only their matching, vivid green eyes that gave them away as family. More often than not, however, the misconception that they weren't related worked well in their favor. An enemy could be fooled into thinking one would easily betray the other, but would have a great surprise when they revealed their relations and unbreakable sibling bond.

Orion, though, chose not to make it clear that Abra was indeed his sister. He saw her as a superior, though whether it was by choice or otherwise was unclear. Abra seemed to be indifferent to the matter, as she had her own agenda to get through. Her goal was to make a pack of her own and to become a great alpha like their grandfather, Phib, had been. Her silvery brother scoffed at her plans, seeing them as far-reaching, but he nevertheless supported her in her quest.

At the moment, they were in the midst of a search for more potential pack members. Both were rather new at this, however, and so weren't exactly sure how to go about recruiting. Did they simply talk to others and ask if they'd wish to join? It seemed the most logical thing, but the most obvious wasn't always necessarily the best solution.

Thinking along those lines, Abra slowed her walk slightly, so that she fell a little behind her brother. "Do you think many will want to join us?" she asked, not quite voicing her doubts but letting a little of it seep into her tone.

"I'm sure if you just present our lifestyle to them in a way that seems likeable, then they should at least consider it." Orion, the seemingly less creative of the two. He appeared to hold no ambitions for himself and to be content to follow his sister's lead, although he was technically older.

"But what is our lifestyle?" she shot back, shaking her head doubtfully. "Lones? Is that what we are? We are certainly without a pack, and even without any lands to which we have a claim!" She sighed disgustedly and stopped moving altogether. Her brother took a moment or two to realize it, but eventually he circled back around to join her. He rolled his green eyes at her, seemingly bored with the subject.

"Maybe you've just been thinking about this too hard," he offered, pulling on her ear a bit with his teeth. Though they were adults, they had their moments of playful puppyness. Orion seemed to use those moments to distract his sister when her thoughts clouded her judgement and began worrying her too much. Abra knew this, and was thankful for his behavior. She swiped a paw at him, purposely missing and doing nothing but disturbing the air around them.

"Maybe you're right," she conceded, though her mind continued to search through possibilities. "Perhaps I should find a suitable place first. I don't have to claim it right away, but I should have some sort of... base, if that's even the right term." The term 'base' made her operation sound almost militant, but she couldn't think of a better word for it at the moment. "I mean, not everyone is going to be content to wander around for who knows how long before I actually get everything settled and organized. I also need to scout out other packs and to see which ones would be friendly to a new group springing up in their midst. I wouldn't want to claim hostile territory..." Her words trailed off as she continued this train of thought within her mind. Orion waited patiently, knowing she wanted a moment to get her thoughts in order.

After a minute or two, a look of frustration overcame the dark female's face, and she shook her head slightly. "There's too much to sort through right now, and my belly won't stop growling at me. Shall we hunt, Orion?" She hadn't missed his stomach's protests of hunger either, and knew that he was probably just as hungry as she was.

A grin crossed the silver male's face as he nodded in agreement. "Lead the way, Alpha Abra." He said her title and name in a mocking tone, but she knew that he was only playing. She nipped at the air around his face before scenting the wind. There was a small group of deer nearby, and she knew they could fell one easily. He seemed to catch the same scent that she had, and so was on the same page and ready to begin. Abra led the way away from their current spot, with her brother behind her.

With her back to him, she couldn't see the look of hostility and evil cunning that had suddenly dominated her brother's features.

The sun had risen and fallen a few times before the sibling wolves finished off their kill. They had a healthy appetite, but the prey they had fallen had maintained a bit more fat than was usual, and so it had lasted them several days. They stayed near the kill mostly, though sometimes Abra wandered off to see if she could find anyone in the surrounding area. She had thought that the scent of the kill would draw others in, eager for an easy meal. Her theory, however, proved flawed. Lone wolves were probably far more cautious of free food than a pack wolf might be, and would most likely flee at the sight of any wolves guarding the kill. Not that they were particularly guarding it.

It was the middle of the day, and they were splayed out on their sides beside the kill that was now diminished down to some skin and bones. Their bellies were slightly rounded with their latest meal and they were enjoying the warmest of the sun's midday rays. Rolling over so that she could see her brother, Abra sighed, partially in contentment and partially in annoyance.

"Still nobody," she commented, not really looking to start a conversation. "You would think that wolves might at least be curious about us." By 'wolves' she meant males. And by 'us' she meant herself. She was a young adult, in the prime of her life. Plus, she wasn't so focused on her task as to completely bypass the instinct to reproduce. She wasn't particularly looking for a mate, but she supposed it would help to have one. She had her brother, but she knew he had no desire to be alpha alongside her. It would be better if she could find another male to hold the position with her, and later to start their own bloodline. An alpha needed an heir, after all.

Orion popped one eye open and stared at her for a moment, perhaps guessing at the turn of her thoughts. "We've hardly moved the past few days. You think everything is just going to happen and come all to you?" His tone was a little harsh, but then she had interrupted his dozing! Abra's jaw clenched, keeping her from being harsh in return.

"I just didn't think it would take so long," she murmured, letting go her angry feelings towards her brother. He was all that she had, and she was all that he had. Together they had a better chance of surviving, and together they had a better chance of making this pack work. But she was a little put off by the fact that they hadn't recruited anyone else thus far. She needed her pack members, and soon! An alpha couldn't be an alpha without followers.

Orion didn't seem bothered by such setbacks. Ambition-less and sometimes lazy, he rather enjoyed moments such as these. He wasn't in any hurry to go about and radically change their lives, so he wasn't trying very hard. Abra wished that he would, if not for the company then at least for the sake of making his sister's wishes come true. All she had ever wanted to be, since she had been a pup, was a leader like her grandfather. She had always looked up to him and admired his ability to control such a large pack, and without the use of force or violence! He was respected and admired, and that was all that she wanted for herself. She wanted that spotlight, to be able to make a difference for the better in the lives of others.

"Can't you try, just a little, to make this work?" she asked, a little exasperated. Orion growled low, so low that she mostly felt the vibration rather than heard the sound. "I mean," she spoke quickly, in an effort to maintain her one and only supporter, "Don't you wish we could have some company other than each other? I love you brother, but sometimes it is a little monotonous."

Sighing, Orion rolled to his belly. "I suppose you're right, Abra," he conceded, admitting silently that he was getting very irritated with her dreams for the both of them. "If it makes you happy, I shall set out quickly in order to look for someone to join us." He peered at her sister, knowing she would pretend to think about it, then readily agreed.

"Fine," she finally spoke, nodding as a small smile broke across her features. "I suppose I should help as well..." She let her voice trail off, hinting that she wanted to rest right now and save the recruiting for later. Orion chuckled quietly, his thoughts mirroring hers.

"After our nap?" he suggested.

"After our nap," she agreed.

Both rolled around, their backs towards each other, and promptly went to sleep.
