The Sphinx
The Sphinx were very old and very dangerous creatures, ones that primarily were circulated through Greek and Egyptian lore. While the people may have pummeled the true legend until it was so twisted you could ring water out of it, the assumptions based around a Sphinx' appearence and general demeanor was not far off.
Myths tell of only one Sphinx, a female with a lion body, wings, and a snake tail, who sat at the entrance to various cities and asked passerbys riddles. If the poor fellow got it wrong, he would be strangled to death- yet a right answer would lead the Sphinx to kill herself.
Years went by and no one had answered any riddle correctly, until one fateful day when a man called Oepidus answered the famous riddle: "What walks on four legs in the morning, two legs in the afternoon, and three at night?" In which the answer was: "Man. For man crawls on all fours when he is a child, walks on two legs as an adult, and must use a cane as an assisting leg in old age."
The Sphinx was so aghast that she cast herself down from her cliff and died.
-----------~------------
While this legend is a fun read, it isn't particularly accurate. There were numerous Sphinx- they were a people who lived deep in the desert, who ate human flesh... and usually drew humans to their territory through sandstorms. They were taught from birth to lie and trust no one, and talk in riddles- a technique used to confuse their dinner before they ate it.
The Sphinx in appearence had no wings, but they had bent horns and black tongues. Their bodies were made of sand, and their tails were scaled with scythes at the end.
Though these days, Sphinx have all but become extinct to the world. Hunters, humans who rode in white caravans across the deserts, hunted them out for their bones and horns, thinking that such things held the wisdom of the ages. The Sphinx were poached and decimated, and now they live in scattered numbers, hiding in remote regions of the world... disguised as their prey.
