The US Government's psychic spying program, codenamed STAR GATE, existed for almost three decades. It contributed to intelligence during the Cold War and the Iran Hostage Crisis. There are rumors that after the program was killed and declassified by the CIA in 1995 that it went underground, the exposure being a smokescreen.
