Name & Meaning: Ciarán - "Little dark one" Gender: Male Birthdate: July 13 Attached To (Host): Kaito Personality: A shadow who mostly squeaks instead of even trying to make normal sounds, Ciarán is highly attached to his host. It's rare to see the shadow by himself and only then it's because Kaito has made him stay behind. That's when he gets moopy or angry even. But he can be easily distracted by things even when alone to pass the time - unless he just falls asleep of course. Extra:*Slight Narcolepsy - Seems this guy tends to fall asleep at the weirdest times, though it does help that it hits mostly during the day while he does run around all night after Kaito.
*Eosophobia - Fear of dawn or daylight. ((You would think that the little guy would poof with the sun by the way he always hides behind Kaito even if there's a little sun outside))
*Eremophobia? - It's unsure if he is afraid of being by himself or if he's just really really attached to Kaito.
*Disposophobia? - Ever seen the tv show horders? This little guy would do it if he could.

((Note: This entry is written with Kaito at the child stage)) The more he practiced with his ability, the more the young prince could actually see into the shadows. Now that he was older, his infant fear of the shadows had reduced and instead turned into a curiosity. How far could his shadow abilities reach? What was out there beyond the darkness? Was he the only one who could puppet shadows?
Now that he was exploring more and more, Kaito began to get bolder with each visit to the shadows. But it was because of this that he caught the attention of something small with white glowing eyes.
One day it actually followed him home.
Kaito felt a tug on his own tail and turned with a yelp. What was that? He frowned as all he could see was his own shadow with it's tail mimicking his.....wait a second he didn't have horns. "Get off!" Shoving hard, Kaito pushed something out of his shadow. Some weird thing that was a shadow too?
"Squee, squee!" It's white eyes narrowed at him and Kaito watched in amazement as the thing actually pouted at him. All this time shadows were interpretable to him - but this thing really had something different about it! To actually pout? Like this at him?
Kaito's ears twitched as he heard footsteps down the hallway. Oh no. "I've got to go. Go...go back to your home now." He muttered and started to run down the hallway. What he didn't see was that the shadow actually slipped into his own shadow again like it was part of him. -------------------------------------------------------------
Back in his bedroom, Kaito knew things weren't right when Kee actually growled at him. "What is it, Kee?" Kaito frowned while he pat his dog's ears. Wait a second...looking up into the mirror the boy groaned. "Oh not again! Why are you following me?"
"Squee! Keek?" With a yawn the shadow pointed to him.
"You what?" Kaito rubbed his forehead. What the thing was trying to tell him actually made sense. Squeaks or not, for some reason the boy understood the shadow. "Don't tell me you're serious."
The shadow nodded triumphantly as it latched onto Kaito's leg. Kee growled softly and the shadow hid again behind Kaito. "Calm down, Kee." Kaito motioned to his dog and she whimpered before moving back to her bed. "I've already got a pet, why you too?"
Not that he minded adding another to his home, but still. He didn't like the idea that something had chosen to come to him rather than him being the one in charge. Especially something that clung to him like it was his actual shadow. Which of course it wasn't...Kaito looked at his shadow just to make sure. Yup, it was still there. A faint reflection of himself though for some reason it looked more gray to him than before. The boy shook his head. I need some sleep.
"Alright." Kaito sighed as he pulled the shadow off of his leg, "But just until I decided about this, kay?" The shadow nodded and gave him a big grin. It figured that it would be there to stay no matter what.
"Cia..."
"Cia?" Kaito frowned before blinking, "Oh? Is Cia your name?"
The shadow nodded before adding, "Ran!" In a flurry of squeaks it motioned to Kaito and the boy nodded with a small laugh.
"I get it, Ciaran then?" The shadow nodded happily as it followed Kaito to his bed. With a growl Kaito pushed him off. "I sleep by myself." He commented before crawling under the covers. The sun was coming up and he was feeling awfully sleepy.
The shadow pouted again but watched as his host drifted off to sleep. With a grin he waited til Kaito was deeply asleep before jumping into the bed and cuddling up next to Kee who too had climbed up. Both watched him before drifting off to sleep themselves. Word count: 648

38. Oooh, moon and stars! Kaito had started climbing out of his bedroom window when a tug on his pant leg reminded him of his new friend, pet, shadow? Anyway the boy looked down at Ciarán with a sigh. “I’m used to coming up here by myself you know.”
But Ciarán just looked pleadingly up at Kaito and with a sigh the child gave a nod. “Fine, but if you fall it’s not my problem.” With a happy squeak Ciarán nodded and started to climb up on the roof after his master. Woah! Ciarán squeaked happily as it looked over the edge of the roof. They were so high up! The thought made the shadow pause. Was it safe up here? Looking quizzically up at Kaito, Ciarán watched in disbelief as the boy laughed. “Heights don’t scare me, Cia. Do they scare you then?” Making a face, Ciarán shook his head rapidly. No! No! If it didn’t scare Kaito-san then no way was he scared! Yup! Though the shadow made no move to follow Kaito higher up and instead took it’s time studying the rooftop. They were high up. Really, really high up. Could shadows go squish, squish? Cuz that would hurt lots.
“Oiy! Are you coming up here or not?” Kaito leaned over the higher rooftop of the castle with ease and gave a fangy grin to the shadow, “Scared still?”
The shadow squeaked out loud in protest and the boy laughed. “Alright then if you’re so brave.” His hand reached out for Ciarán and passed through the weird substance that made Cia up (which of course made Ciarán squeak in laughter) before his ability kicked in and the shadow became solid to Kaito. “Careful.” He added as Ciarán joined him on the roof.
It was another dark night and Ciarán had been distracted by his new fear of heights -which he wouldn‘t let claim him since Master loved heights! Definitely can‘t be afraid of what Kaito wasn‘t afraid of. Yup. But when the shadow crept over to Kaito and sat down beside him on the high roof (well technically after Kaito had convinced him that the gargoyles wouldn’t eat him as long as he behaved) Ciarán finally felt relaxed. Almost enough to go to sleep time.
“Oiy, you’re missing out.” Kaito poked his shadow and pointed.
“Ooooh!” Ciarán squeaked and his white eyes grew wide as he looked up. Bright shinies in the sky! But there weren’t scary like the sun. Kaito told him about the stars and moon and the shadow squeaked happily. They were so sparkly! And so until just before sunrise (for Kaito was sleepy then, and Ciarán hated the sunlight) Kaito and Ciarán watched the stars while Kaito told him all he knew from his mother about the night sky.

28. Look, a snail! Let's follow it! It was evening and Kaito had wandered out into the castle’s courtyard. Trotting happily behind him was his dog, Kee while Ciarán stayed behind them sheepishly. After all the sunlight was a scary thing and the big yellow ball in the sky hadn’t exactly disappeared yet. Though Ciarán did hope that it would poof away soon. Definitely!
But he didn’t want to be alone in the big scary castle and so he found himself following Kaito who had decided to go outside despite his flurry of squeaking protests. “Squee.” The shadow pressed against the wall before realizing that he would lose Kaito once his master when to the gardens. But…but! Ciarán squeaked helplessly as he noted the faint rays of light that shone on the grass. Could he?
Closing his white eyes, Ciarán ran forward and tumbled into Kaito who was passing through the rosebushes. “Oh!” Kaito yelped before his tail twitched free of Ciarán’s grasp. “So you decided to come after all, eh?” The boy rolled his eyes at the fearful expression in the shadow’s eyes. “Oh, the sun is already leaving the sky see?” He pointed up and watched as the shadow relaxed. “Anyway, I’ll be over here.”
“Squee?” Now Ciarán was confused.
“I’ve got lessons. You can’t come, cuz I know you’ll distract me.” Let alone if Deirdre was there. Kaito frowned, so far they had managed to hide Ciarán since he could mingle with his own shadow and hide there while he was with someone else. But Kaito knew the shadow’s attention span wouldn’t last that long for a lesson. Plus if it fell asleep and tumbled out of his shadow…well just no way was he gonna risk it. Kaito shook his head and pointed to a gazebo in their courtyard. “I’ll be there. So you can play here. Just don’t let anyone see you, kay?”
Ciarán nodded and held back his protests and instead clung to Kee as Kaito ran off to his lesson leaving the two of them alone in the garden. What was he gonna do? Now that Kaito wasn’t here…Ciarán looked at Kee helplessly. The dog just sat down and rolled around din the grass though.
Frowning the shadow followed her example before something strange came into their path. It was slimy and weird. But where was it going? Very easily the shadow forgot about Kaito’s warnings and ended up following the thing out into the open. Scooting forward on his stomach Ciarán giggled as the snail passed through him and the shadow turned and kept following. Making a squeak it motioned to Kee and the dog started following as well.
Both managed to make it through the hedges and didn’t even realize that the snail was scooting it’s way towards the gazebo. But Ciarán was too busy thinking about all the reasons for a snail to be moving. Maybe it was on a quest? Or was it hungry and looking for food? Or was it bored like him and Kee? The possibilities were endless!
While his thoughts about the snail were endless, the trail did have an ending. Ciarán gave a squeak of surprise as someone picked him up and tossed him out of sight. “Squee!” Kee let out a bark and jumped after the shadow who was now peeking out from between two bushes sheepishly.
There staring at him was an angry Kaito who had managed to toss him over before anyone else had seen him. Ciarán let out a soft startled squeak as he saw all the people with sharp teeth. They were scary. Shivering the shadow backed away from Kaito and moved back towards the castle.
He wanted to get away as quickly as possible. He could find Kaito later - oh wait! Ciarán stopped and turned. Was that another snail? With another look at Kee both turned and started to walk after it. They had to see where it was going after all!Word Count: 656

29. Wait! That's not a coloring book!
“Come on, Cia.” Kaito looked around his bedroom before frowning. “Ciarán?” The boy called out again before hearing the shuffling of papers underneath his bed. Checking the window, Kaito found it firmly shut so it couldn’t be a breeze. So what was it?
“Squee!” Ciarán jumped and bounced his head against the underside of Kaito’s bed as the boy popped up beside of him. In his hand there was a jumbo crayon promptly marked with the label of periwinkle. Around its feet were the rest of the box that had once been in some form of order. Blinking Kaito let his eyes adjust to the darkness as Ciarán started to randomly grab at the crayons in an attempt to keep them together. “Squee, squee! Kai!”
Kaito laughed. “Sorry to scare you like that, Cia.” His tail twitched behind him at the lie - not really. The shadow gave a pout which spoke volumes about how much he really doubted his master’s word. Kaito scooted closer towards his shadow with a frown, “What are you doing under here anyway? And with my crayons?”
The shadow shrugged innocently before Kaito’s stare brought on a story of squeaks. Ciarán grinned as his master held out a hand and after digging around in the mess beside of him, he handed over a paper. Kaito had to flip it over to find the scribble drawing that Ciarán had made and the boy nodded. “Nice, Cia.” Though really what was it? A mess of dark blue with some periwinkle blocks over head. Were those clouds? Anyway, the gray hole he took to be the moon while the blots of yellow were stars. After he looked closely Kaito frowned, “Is that scary thing what I think it is?”
Ciarán gave a choked laughing sound as he shrugged at his master. “Squee.” Innocently it shuffled through more papers and handed over another one. This one actually was innocent enough to Kaito. A scribble of Kee and Cia going after some sort of strange circle creature that left green lines behind it. Raising an eyebrow Kaito handed the paper back, “Well that one is interesting.”
It was the next paper that really got his attention. While he was handing it back to Ciarán, Kaito caught a glimpse at the other side. “Cia.” He spoke in a hushed voice while staring down the shadow. Blinking his white gaze up at Kaito the shadow squeaked questioningly. “Do you…Do you know what paper you used?”
The shadow gave a shrug. “Great.” Reaching out Kaito grabbed the papers and scooted out from underneath the bed and sat on his window seat where Ciarán followed him. “You. This wasn’t coloring paper.” Ciarán tilted his head curiously. Wasn’t all paper coloring paper? Cuz, he always saw Kaito doodling weird things on paper like this. So it was fine that he added to those scribbles right?
Ciarán was startled as the boy tossed the papers at him and jumped back with a squeak. “Ciarán! THESE WERE MY MATH PAPERS!”
Ciarán blinked up at his master before forming one word. “Oopsie~”

7. Omg, black shadowy thing! Quick, hit X button!
Kaito was playing around on a laptop that he had borrowed from one of the castle staff. Which was perfect for an afternoon like this when he was sleepy, but just couldn’t get himself to sleep. Talking about it being the afternoon still… ‘”Oh come on, Cia. The sun isn’t gonna vaporize you, honest.” He peeked under the bed where the shadow was shivering. It had woken up because the cool feel of his master had moved away and then bam! Kaito had moved curtains to let sunlight in. The shadow shivered. That had been a close one!
“I closed the windows again. Really I don‘t like the sun either but I had to see what it looked like outside.” Kaito added on as the shadow scooted further back. “So no more sunlight in here, Cia. Promise.” He shrugged as the shadow shook its head again and with a sigh the boy slipped down off of the end of the bed and onto the floor with the laptop in his lap.
The game on here was some weird thing, but Kaito didn’t mind. It passed the time since he couldn’t roam the hallways without Cia throwing a fit. Last time his whole room well it just hadn’t looked like his room after leaving Ciarán by himself. Getting the jewels to line up, Kaito grinned as he heard something scooting closer towards him and the laptop. Especially every time he cleared a level and sparkly music came on.
Clutching a pillow as his protection, Ciarán finally scooted right next to Kaito. Though his white gaze was still looking around the room every other minute so no sun could surprise him again. “Squee.” It muttered in protest to Kaito’s grin.
“Aye, aye.” He rolled his eyes before retuning to the bejeweled game. “Here.” Forcing the pillow from the shadow’s grasp, Kaito let Ciarán on his lap and showed the shadow how to turn the jewels and play. “Try.”
Blinking in amazement, Ciarán started to copy his master and squeaked happily as the sparkly music came on declaring that they were on a new level. His joy however only last as long as the game was easy. Before long the jewels were flashing at high speeds and in terror Ciarán tried to push all the keys at once. “Squee! Squee! Eeee!”
Something black popped up on the screen and Kaito immediately stopped laughing to freak out himself. “What is that?!” He yelped before pointing at Ciarán, “Quick hit the X button and close the game! Now!” Both reached out and managed to close the game and after frantically shutting it down, Kaito scooted the laptop to the other side of the room. That was scary.
Though when the boy looked at his shadow a twisted grin came over his features. “Where’s your X-button you odd shadow thingy?” He asked before reaching out for Ciarán who let out a squeak of surprise. “Come on!” Laughing the boy chased the shadow around the room and started to poke him repeatedly.
Poking of course made the shadow erupt into squeaks of laughter that lasted until the sun actually set and the rest of the castle came to life.

17. You ate WHAT?!!?!?! Ciarán squeaked happily as he sat on Kaito's bed and surveyed the room. Beside of him was Kee who was watching the shadow with vague interest. Really the dog was wondering what the strange creature was up to again and if it would make Kaito angry or happy this time. Especially since it wasn’t looking worried about the fact that Kaito had just left the room.
Of course Ciarán cared that his master had left the room, but the shadow was plotting. What could he do to make Kaito happy? With a squeak the shadow slipped off of the bed and crawled towards the door. He only stopped when Kee made an unhappy whimper. “Squee.” Sure Kaito had told both of them to stay, but so? Ciarán knew his way around the castle by now….well at least around parts of the castle. But it wasn’t that big of a place right? The shadow nodded. Though really why they didn’t say house instead of castle confused the poor thing. Did they call a castle a castle because of it’s stone walls?
Shaking his head Ciarán managed to slip under the door and out into the hallway. Turning the handle he motioned to Kee and the dog sadly followed. Where were they going?
Ciarán squeaked happily as he made it to that one place that Kaito had been before. But once he looked through the cabinets that he could reach, the shadow realized that nothing was there that looked yummy. With a frown Ciarán started down another hallway and another. He only paused to nap and then Kee carried him.
Finally they came to an amazing place with lots of yummies! Ciarán squeaked happily as he dived through the stacks of sparklies and put them into a bag. He could make Kaito a snack with these for when he came back to the room! Even Kee thumped her tail as she caught onto the shadow’s excitement. Whatever it was, Ciarán seemed to know what he was doing.
After filling up the bag, they raced back upstairs to the bedroom. Ciarán looked around before grinning. Great! They still had time to set up. In the next half-hour, Ciarán scrambled around the room to set up his yummies to show Kaito. Though the shadow did admittedly sneak some under the bed to join his trove of things.
Looking over his work made Ciarán giggle happily. Now all he had to do was wait….
When Kaito finally came back to his room after his lessons, he was surprised to see that everything was in one piece. “Good job, Cia.” He commented as the shadow peeked out from beneath the bed with a squeak. Frowning Kaito blinked at him, “What is it?”
“Yu-yums!” Ciarán giggled as he held out a plate of yummies to Kaito. Not understanding the boy’s confusion the shadow demonstrated how to eat the yummies by swallowing one himself. But for some reason Kaito freaked.
“Ciarán! Don’t tell me you thought these were food?!” Grabbing the plate from the shadow, Kaito shook his head. “Ciarán. Yummies aren’t these.” He held up a ruby and shook it in the air, “You want the sheet candy that servant lady made yesterday.” Rubbing a jewel in his hand he sighed. He could kinda see how a shadow would think it was some candy…but really? “Seriously?”
“I’ll get you real food.” Kaito snapped at the shadow which was squeaking softly beneath his bed. “Don’t! And I mean, never ever! Try eating anything without letting me know!” With a sigh, he headed back to the treasury to return some of his mother’s precious stones. Later he’d get Ciarán to somehow cough up the other ones….somehow. (word count: 617)

Movie Night
Ciarán squeaked in protest as Kaito scooted away from him. The shadow frowned as it wiggled down across the sleek surface of Kaito’s fancy leather couch. They were supposed to be watching this together not apart! His protests carried on until the boy stuck a bowl of popcorn into his arms. “Squee.” Ciarán mumbled but found himself digging into the popcorn. After this bowl, he would get back on his real seat - Kaito’s lap. After munching on some more popcorn, the shadow finally looked up to look at the screen. Ooooh. Nudging Kaito Ciarán squeaked happily and pointed at the action. “Mmm’hmm.” Kaito nodded though he didn’t spare a glance to his shadow because the movie was at its climax.
Somewhere in the castle a clock struck five. About time for him to sleep, Kaito yawned as the movie credits started to scroll down the screen. Well that had been an interesting movie. Though he couldn’t quit figure out why the bad guy hadn’t just killed the ‘hero’ before discussing his plans. Why did they always do that in the movies? What simpletons. At least the fighting made up for it.
As he reached to turn the t.v off Ciarán squeaked protests and tugged on his master’s arm. “Squee! Squee!"
“More?” Kaito frowned. “Aren’t you sleepy, Cia?” The shadow stubbornly shook it’s head no, “What about the sun? You know it hurts to stay up - “
“Squeak!”
“We have plenty of time for movies?” Kaito sighed and ran a hand through his hair, “What do you suppose we watch then, hmm?”
Grinning, Ciarán held up a finger before running out of the room. Kaito frowned in confusion as he stuck his head out to peer down the hallway and nearly got hit by a flying dvd. “Ciarán! Watch it!” The shadow squeaked apologetically as Kaito picked up the dvd. “Seriously? You wanna watch this?”
Ciarán nodded eagerly and bouncing on his feet pointed towards the tv. “Squeak! Squee!” Kaito only rolled his eyes with a soft laugh before giving in. Might as well let him watch it - after all tonight was another round of lessons and if Ciarán wasn’t happy now then Kaito wouldn’t be happy later, especially if the shadow was left alone in his room.
Pushing play, both settled on the couch and prepared for another round of movie watching. Though by early morning - right before the sun was fully up over the horizons, Lyoko found her son curled up sleeping on the couch while the credits of her Japanese romance movie rolled up the screen.
With a soft smile, Lyoko scooped up Kaito and placed him in his bed to sleep. “G’night my son.” She whispered before kissing his cheek and leaving the room. The door closed and Ciarán squeaked softly before crawling from beneath the couch and pushing play again. Movies, the shadow had discovered, were fun~ (wc: 491)
