Yet another sad day at the Dakar Rally, as during stage 13, a family watching the Rally were crossing the road, each separately, and one of their few children with them was struck by car number 420. Emergency personel were immediately on the scene, and the child was airlifted to a nearby care facility, but died before arriving.
An Official Press Release and Statement are available at the Dakar website. The promoters of the Rally are deeply saddened by the loss of a spectator, and have sent their remorse to the family who have just lost a precious child.
-------------------------------------
Many deaths do occur in Rally Racing, as it is a dangerous sport, and they are especially dangerous in the later stages of the Dakar Rally, where high speeds make for awkward altercations. An example would be yesterday, Rally Leader Stephane Peterhansel hit a tree, and is no longer in title contention, though still driving in the Dakar. Just a fraction in a different angle, and Peterhansel may have found himself in a fatal situation... that's how crazy this sport is.

Stage 14, another child dies after a support truck hit him as he also was crossing the road. Stage 15 was abandoned in memory of the two children who lost their lives watching the greatest Rally ever raced.
