honestly,the way you do it always varies based on the individual. first of all, is it entirely necessary that you come out? unless you have a significant other that you're dying for your parents to meet, then there's no need to tell them.

most importantly, though, are you emotionally prepared for any outcome of this? for instance, do you think you could handle (worst case scenario) your parents kicking you out of the house and getting rid of you entirely? how about if they force you into religion because they want to fix you? are you ready for arguements that go on for hours with both you and your parents screaming at the top of your lungs, neither party listening?

if you think you're ready for that (and let's face it, that might not even happen. you gotta be prepared, though) then go for it. i'm not trying to scare you into the closet; there's no greater feeling than being able to openly talk to your parents about your lifestyle. even if they never want to hear it, knowing that you aren't hiding a secret relieves so much tension. but if you dont have a sweet story-book ending to this, you might wanna save yourself the trouble until you're older and absolutly need to tell them.
