I'm getting ready to enter the field of graphic design in about six months. Where is a good place to begin applying?

As a student? or as a professional?

Where are you located, what kind of work do you want, and what kind is already in your portfolio?

I'd love to [go pro] but I'm really bad at design and probably wouldn't be able to keep up to that level. T__T

I will be entering the field as a professional. I am located in Kansas. I would like to do graphic design work, either with advertising or designing book covers. I have illustrations (drawn by hand with computer layouts for the text), computer layouts including brochures, business suites (envelopes, business cards, letter head), bookcover, pop bottle box design, posters, and a magazine.

I also have experience in web design, video editing, and a little animation. I've used quark, photoshop, illustrator, Indesign, premier, Avid, and a little bit of corel.

I'm working on getting my portfolio put together this summer. I believe I am going to put the portfolio on a DVD disk. That way I will also be able to include video samples. Is that the best way to present a porfolio?

Most agencies will ultimately want to see a print portfolio in person, but a dvd (or I prefer CD most times... cheaper and unless you are really going for TV work, shouldn't need that much video data anyway) is a good way to send out to alot of agencies without having to keep track of it too much.

Ad work is very different from Book cover design. I would almost prepare two different portfolio presentations for the two markets. But that's just me.

You might want to mock up some ad work, as well as some book covers too, since you don't already have them in your book. My #1 rule is to show more of the work I want... not the work I have done. Even if it means doing spec work for myself to have something to show.

I don't know much about the market in KS, so I have no specific recommendations to give. Head to the Library and find the redbooks in the reference section. You should be able to see which agencies and larger design firms have offices in the state. And good research ahead if you think you might want to move.

Good luck.

Thanks! That helped a lot.

I'm already in the professional field and I plan to stay in it the rest of my life. I've worked with probally over 50 bands so far, both big and small, and various businesses and music venues in the michigan area and surrounding states. If theres one thing I have to say about it though, steer clear of doing the whole work for free in turn for a service. The worst people to work with are the people who offer a service back. They feel like they're more important than all your other customers and taht if you miss a deadline by even an hour go off like crazy on you. One of the things I hate dealing with most is an impatient customer who isn't even a customer!

My dream job would be 3D animation for films or television. First I need to learn how to draw, and I hope the rest will come naturally. (I've done some 2D animation.)

[Ditto.]: its not a problem if you want to do 3d and your not good at drawing...if you have talent for it its alot easyer, and it never comes naturally you have 2 put alot of effort in it and time (but thats for everything offcourse)...they only take the best in the animation 3d business. I did some 3d myself 2 and its a nice thing, but programs like 3dmax and maya are so big...behind every button you will find 100 more functions...it takes years to get that under control. Well and if you have the talent and the perseverance then i wish you luck offcourse! biggrin

Im a graphical and multimedia designer myself (got both dilpomas). Ive also got my own company. I make alot of websites, animations, logos, posters/flyers etc etc... still i dont see myself as a proff, i think you only can say that is when you got alot of experience and are well-known in that business and deliver fast and also good work and that takes years too master it...

I'll be graduating soon for digital media. I basically learned all the design stuff from photoshop to 3dmax to flash and to combustion. I'm not really sure what I want to do, I'm kinda having fun with flash and combustion. I think I do pretty well in all my classwork and its so hard for me to choose one. o.o Well, I know I don't want to do 3d stuff and websites anymore. Any suggestions on how I can choose what kind of field I can look jobs in? because I'm so confused. @.@

I was wondering, for a portfolio website, how should my site be like? Very simple? have a lot of designs on it? Is it better to have a portfolio site or cd?

jess: Congrats on graduating! And kudos for getting to the interview stage so far. The design work on your website is really impressive, I'm sure you'll get a job easily enough ^_^

Senshi: Your portfolio site should reflect your design style and the type of work you'd like to get as much as possible 3nodding If you want to work with Flash and combustion (what's combustion? O_o) and feel that those are your strong points, try and focus on those areas with your samples.

I think sites and cd's both that their positives and negatives. As a web designer I really needed to have a website to apply for jobs, but if you're not interested in working in the web its not really essential. On the plus side for a website it's much easier to email (or send a letter) with your url than it is to post a cd, more convenient for the user and having one can reach a larger audience. A cd on the other hand is much harder to ignore than an email with a url, so you might find that your chances of actually being looked at improve. It's nice to have something tangible to look at ^_^ It might also be better if you have really large files that aren't suitable for the web.

Not sure if you check this guild anymore, but thought I'd post that up anyway sweatdrop

I'm currently working as a graphic designer focusing mainly on web, which I'm really enjoying ^_^ I'm just working at a small centre which is part of my old university and do mainly in-house branding and web work, with occasional commercial clients. It's a nice atmosphere, very laid back. As my workplace was originally put together by a group of web developers and I'm the lead designer despite not having any formal training and only having a small amount of experience before working there, I feel like its not as professional as some bigger design studios around, but me and the company are improving with each client and I'd say we're decent competition now ^_^

Being a new company it doesn't pay much, but my boss is quite generous with paying for me and our other designer to do short courses in design which is a major plus (those courses are so damn expensive!). I'm also living at home and don't have a huge amount of expenses, so at this point I'm pretty happy with it. Once I've worked up enough experience I might try making the jump to a more established company, and eventually try to start my own business 3nodding

OH and I agree with jess that knowing people in the field helps soooo much! I managed to get work experience (required for my computer science degree) with and friend's brother's friend, then got my current job because I was recommended by the place I did work experience at.

Graphic design is probably one of the only things I'm good at (other than crosswords =)
I think that being a pro at it would ruin my love for graphic design, because of the pressure to make graphics at any time, and if it's not good, then not getting paid...
I would like to be a pro though, because having a career that I enjoy is my dream.

I worked as a proffessional webdesigner until recently when I, due to company budget reasons (and my boss feeling threatened by me having visions), lost my job. It was a great experience though and I've learned a lot during that time. I know most XHTML and CSS by heart now and I've realised what a pain in the butt customers can be.

Well, if anyone needs a website I'll do it for some gold... wink

I would like to house my own design firm, starting with a creation of an superior video game. I plan to implement a system I have created for a bunch of role players, giving me a base for the characters, but I still have to learn how to get the motions and sprites down.

Everyone power up your PCs this is going to be a super game with a massive network of players, allowing for one of the closest simulations for the .Hack anime Game system.
