Quiet Wolf’s body quivered in excitement as she slowly glided through the water. She’d never been scuba diving before, and the colors of this underwater jungle seemed to glow. Large fish decorated with spikes and flowing fins displayed themselves proudly, and little, brightly colored fish darted from nook to crevice like aquatic comets. Grinning behind her mask, she glanced up at the boat. It wasn’t too far away just yet, and she still had an hour’s worth of oxygen left. Plenty of time to explore. As she drifted beyond the major activity sectors of the reef, a dimly lit cave came into view. Judging by what light it did have, it must have a hole at the top, where light could get through. That was worth checking out. The walls of the pseudo-cave were surprisingly smooth, and she ran her hands over them as she ascended toward the light. Breaching the surface of the water, Quiet Wolf took off he mask to conserve her oxygen supply. There was no sun. The light she had seen came from luminescent carvings; pictures beneath runes of some sort. “Wow,” she breathed, paddling in place. She had never seen this sort of writing before; it looked like a fusion of cuneiform and Korean characters. Not exactly like I could sound this out, she mused. She sincerely regretted not springing for an underwater camera. Placing the mask back on her face she went under again, and found an alternate path than the one she entered. It looked roomy enough, so she wasn’t in any danger of getting stuck, and it was also oddly smooth. Pushing herself though, she came upon another cavern, though this one was completely submerged. Here, the glyphs seemed to draw her to the center of a wall, where a circle had been carved out. Running her hands over the protrusion, she gently pushed inward. With a grating that pulsed through the water, it gave. The false-cave wall sunk into the ground, revealing a great mass behind it. Slowly, one gigantic eye opened and stared at her with sapient intensity. I AM THE LEVIATHAN the alien thought roared in Quiet Wolf’s mind, and memories that were not her own played across her mind like movies. Ancient seas populated with species older than man, chunks of land that were dwarfed by the leviathan’s bulk, battles with ships from Phoenicia… “Stop,” Quiet Wolf pleaded through her mask. The visions faded. EONS HAVE PASSED ERE A HUMAN CALLED UPON ME. WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE ME DO, GIRL? A joyful, yet incredulous, smile broke out across her face. “I think my diving lesson is gonna be on hold for a while now…”
