I'm not going to jump into the sony dslr debate full swing. I'm just going to point out that Nikon uses sony sensors in their cameras (tweaked but still), so you can't really say sony is made of loose.
This being said I still feel like they've been lagging behind for a few years now as have Pentax.
If I recall correctly (off the top of my head) their entry dslrs are decent. But why bother if the day you want to switch to a better model you're left swooning over the competition's catalog... yet stuck with your lenses.

I will however say that quite a few people I know have been complaning about the quality of sony compacts (lens quality to be specific). Which is a little odd because they're made by Zeiss so you would expect them to be good. Maybe it's a lens/camera compatibility issue but that would seem odd for a compact.
