Background: Grimmjow was once as all espada a hollow that slowly began to evolve when a amount of human and hollow souls are consumed. Grimmjow was one of the first to evolve to become a Espada when Aizen came to Hueco Mundo. In the past he has gone against orders, had arrancar killed, fought with Ichigo Kurosaki as well as kill a fellow espada.
During his last battle with Ichigo, we was wounded and nearly killed by an espada. He has now healed as well as increased his power and looks to take revenge on the shinigami.
How they became an Espada: By killing and eating many hollow and menos.

Why? Not only due to the story, Grimmjow had his first fight with a shinigami and that fight was with Ichigo. They traded blows fight after fight and noted to each other that in the end it would be a battle between them both.
