Hello there!
I'm a female, and I started when I was 14 years old- I'm 16 now, and I don't do it as much as I used to (perhaps lack of boyfriend? sweatdrop )
Anyway, good luck on your survey!

I discovered cumming in a way unconventionally. It wasn't the standard jerking off. I was 11 when I found out how pleasurable it would be to use the massage function from the shower head.

It wasn't until when I was 14 then I know that the standard way saves a lot of water.

I am a male and approaching 19 in six days and seldom masturbates.

Good luck on your survey!

I was eleven years old when I, quite accidentally, stumbled upon masturbation. In other words, I didn't know what I was doing. When I experienced my first orgasm, I remember distinctly thinking: "Oh God, I'm pregnant. I'm going to get pregnant from this." I was so innocent, haha.

I started at 12, but has being a little confusing for me. It's not so much about masturbation, as it is about loneliness and depression. As well, it's not masturbation to masturbate - it's part of a marriage fantasy. The biggest problem is, after I'm done there's no-one there - it's empty.

I'm not sure if this is just me or do other girls feel this way too! I know (from what I've observed of guys) that it's mostly about sex (body parts without emotion).

I don't know if it is fair to characterize guys as only being interested in the physical aspect. I would argue - and of course I can really only speak for myself - that guys do want the same thing, but a) not in the same way, per se, and b) not necessarily when masturbating.

The parentheses "(from what I've observed of guys)" limits the characterization of guys to just my observation. However, in the "Just for Girls" guild - there is a general (although informal) consensus that guys are sexually oriented, while girls are emotional oriented. Cheating for guys is just "sex". This is accompanied with;

  • Porn and Strippers (with "favors") at stages
  • Porn is primarily aimed at guys
  • Guys often speak of "scoring" with girls - not their feelings on the relationship
  • When it is assumed that guy "scored" with a girl - it's Hi5's all around
  • Guys typically post (about Miley Cyrus and other such celebrities) "she's stacked", "she's do-able" or some other crude remark

This makes it difficult for guys who are not like that, but act like that to fit in. It must also be stated that this changes (some what), after 25.

No argument as to the general idea, but I would argue that some chunk of this is due to societal pressures and not the actual views held by the boys in question. However, I am not sure how big that chunk is. But yes, the majority is truly sexually oriented.

Also, it's always nice to meet another astrophysics person.
