When it comes to birth control, men have not have many options aside from condoms, surgery, or trusting their significant other is on the pill, the patch, the shot....etc. As someone who does not support the "opt-out" idea for men when it comes to pregnancy, I am beyond excited to see more and more serious attempts to manufacture male BC. I long to see a day where biology doesn't typically dictate the level of control in preventing pregnancy. This particular pill is taken once every three months and, while it doesn't actually kill the sperm, prevents sperm from being able to fertilize and egg. Assuming all goes well, it could be available in about 3 years.

The other plus of this medication is that, according to studies so far, it doesn't have the major side effects that female BC can have. Unfortunately, that also means that some women could be more easily duped into pregnancy by a dishonest partner. Regardless of this, it's nice to see another BC option on the market that isn't p***s shaped saran wrap or another variation of hormonal BC for women. Here's to leveling the playing field, so to speak!

It would be nice, but we've been five years from male birth control for the last forty years. : (

At first I was like: rofl
But then I was like: crying

I don't want to take this off-topic, but what do you mean about the "opt out" option for men?

I think she's meaning the idea some people have about a guy being able to run away with all his money as soon as the woman decides she's keeping the kid.

I can see why people came up with it but it's not brilliant... you'd think if a guy didn't want a kid that much he'd just put something on the end of it. @_@ But then I guess I'm falling into the trap of assuming unplanned/unwanted was down to a lack of BC rather than human error/freak accident.

Like Fran alluded to, I'd be WAY more excited about this if I hadn't read damn near the same article five years ago. Except back then the focus was on rendering sperm immobile.

Yes, that's what I meant by 'opt out.' I wish there was a way to even the keel, but biology isn't fair.

Hrm, this is true. The idea of male BC isn't new and it seems like the pharmaceutical companies are stalling as far as their development is concerned.

I suppose for social and economic reasons male BC probably won't come to fruition anytime soon...men won't want to take it because it's "emasculating" and it won't be marketed because female BC is already established and profitable. Still, the fact that research continues in that area gives me hope.
