I don't know-news gets around pretty fast in VFD. Everyone would know he's dead. So that narrows it down to Justice and Jerome.

Justice Strauss.
"Nobody would write a message to Jacques," Captain Widdershins said. "Aye! Jacques is dead!" "Etratsigam!" Sunny said,
Etratsigam = Magistrate backwards. Magistrate = a public official authorized to decide questions brought before a court of justice Magistrate = Justice Strauss

Magistrate = a public official authorized to decide questions brought before a court of justice Magistrate = Justice Strauss GENIUS! YOU'RE AN ABSOLUTE GENIUS! Of course that would be it. Plus, there were all these things on lemonysnicket.com hinting around to it (Esme Squalor wants "justice") My guess is that Esme will come to her senses when Count Olaf smacks Carmalita or something and then she'll break up with him, wanting to go to court. And who will be there but Justice Strauss. Oh, and I know where the sugar bowl is. It's in the laundry room of Hotel Denouement. Probably you already know that, since he said it right in the middle of the book.

I can vouch that it is really mentioned, but I don't know offhand in which part of the book it's in.

I don't know precisely which page, because it's in one of the big long descriptions. But I memorized it.
"Many small things are hard to find... A small part of a tea set would be hard to find in the busy laundry room of a small hotel..."
I've also had this stupid thought that Lemony would surprise everyone and make 14 books, but that doesn't seem very likely.

I think don't think he'd do something that off hand.

But is it not possible that Justice Strauss wrote the message as well? Nobody would write a message to Jacques... except a magistrate? Just playing with words here.

Mr. MooCow [ddrfreek] Jerome Squalor is not in VFD, period. It's been proven. I'd go with Jacques. He be dead. But maybe the letters in the jam were written before they got word that Jaques was dead? Only Lemony knows the answer.

Well, as I'm sure someone pointed out, Jacques is dead...
Also, Justice Strauss seems like a definite possibility.
Just my two cents.
