Jammed against the western bowl of the Valley of the Protected forest, the Spirit River launches itself into the open air, cascading in huge volumes down sheer cliff until it crashes into the clear waters of Lake Lux below.

The sheer force of it can be heard for miles around, but that is not the only way this natural beauty makes itself known. Billowing mists are carried by winds which sweep along the valley from the North, shrouding the area in fog so thick, some say you need not bend over to drink, but simply stand still and wait with your mouth open and the water will float right in.

It is in these conditions, on the black pebbly shores of Lake Lux that Icarus and Rebel will fight for the position of Alpha. In near blindness, it is only the sounds of slippery, eroded pebbles which give away their opponents.

And so it had come to pass. The final match that would decide the fate of the entire pack would take place on this day. Rebel was a little surprised he had made it thus far, but his journey through the tournament had not been all that glamorous. Once physically defeated by Issun, and once surrendered to by Rouqie. These did not make up the sort of stunning credentials that would befit an alpha. And yet, here he was. The adolescent padded through the thick mist, feeling it condense and dampen his fur. He was unable to see his opponent as of yet, or much of anything really. The force of rushing water drowned out most sounds until his ears were ringing with it. The fog was so thick that he had trouble distinguishing all but a paw's length in front of him.

Rebel looked around him and called out. "Hello? Icarus?" He had learned the name of his opponent through the whispers of other wolves following the last match of the tournament. Whispers which had also included news of A'cuil. A'cuil, who had been his friend after their reunion in the Forest, and one of his only links to the Sure-Claw pack. It was almost surreal that A'cuil was now gone. Rebel found it very troubling, to say the least. Rebel had decided long ago that he would not take up the alpha position, but he would not yield until he knew that Icarus had the right stuff for the job. He knew that A'cuil would have been a good leader, perhaps even the best of what they had, but Rebel decided he would see what this Icarus was made of as well. Perhaps the roguish wolf would gain some new respect, indeed.

xxxxxThe slight crinkle of rocks rubbing against each other gave away Icarus' position as he padded into the area quietly. A low rumble of a growl creeped through him as he realized that his surroundings were clearly not the best for fighting. He could barely see anything. A foot or two infront of him showed pebbles fading, and then, nothing. The white mist swirled around him, isolating him from nature. It was mystical, almost, the way tendrils of fogs danced around him as he moved. His white tail flicked out of anxiety, in response the fog fleed from and followed the limb. Icarus realized that not only would this be the toughest battle physically, it would also be very difficult mentally.

xxxxxLetting a paw travel forward a step, he tested the pebbles beneath him. They gave slightly under the weight of his leg, but still held steady. It would be a slippery match, he decided. A quick skid would not be possible on such terrain. There would be no whipping around to strike back, no bounding over to his opponent. It would likely be a match of skill. The skill to stealthily hide one's path. While both Haven and Sure-Claw wolves had similar techniques, on such ground, his opponent would have the upper-hand.

xxxxxHis thoughts flicked to Rebel. A mere glimpse of the creature reminded him of how intimidating the rebelious wolf could be. Slanted eyes that seemed to stare straight through him, boring into his own. White ears flattened at the thought of facing him. He recognized that they were both adolescents, though he feared the Sure-Claw's power. That wolf had grown in a pack whilst he had been left to fend for himself. Adrenaline began to course through his blood at the mere memories of his past encounters with the Sure-Claws. His eyes dropped, however, as his mind remember A'cuil, his fallen mentor. Cerulean eyes that looked at the ground now, also watched the spotted brute slip away into the river. Icarus shook his head, the time for mourning would come later.

xxxxxIt was then he heard the call of his opponent, not far. Icarus raised his head and peered at the mist, hoping to make out a sort of shape to attach to the voice. He bristled as he realized that there was no way to penetrate the blindness of the haze. "Rebel, you've arrived." He stated in a gruff voice, more to himself than a response. "So it's just us adolescents left, huh?" He barked in a casual tone, directly speaking to the wolf this time.

A dark ear rolled toward the echoing steps approaching. Rebel moved closer to where he thought Icarus was coming from, although it was more of an educated guess. It was nearly impossible to see through the fog. If he had been able to see his opponent, though, the thought might occur that they both looked to be the other's opposite. Whereas Rebel was dark in color, with somewhat frightful eyes, Icarus was very bright, and seemed to be quite kind. The irony was not lost on the adolescent. They had both managed to fight their way to the top, against all adults, and Rebel had not really "won" either of his fights. He was, in his own view, as fit to lead this pack as he was able to see in this fog.

"Just us, and the Spirit River," he replied, stalking a bit closer. He got down low and slowly made his way around in a semi-circle, trying to hear the other wolf's paws on the pebbles beneath them. Without their sense of sight available, this was the only way to truly judge movement. If only the waterfall wasn't so loud... If Rebel was to get behind Icarus, he planned to surprise him.

((Rolling to see if he can sneak behind him. I guess, emotional points? xD))

xxxxxIcarus nodded his head. The mist around him dampened his fur, slowing his movements and chilling him to the bone. He was not used to such an environment, a being of the forest preferred the sunlight through the canopy and a warm dry den. A thought crossed his mind. If he were to become Alpha, would such an environment be asked of him on more than one occasion? His still growing mind couldn't comprehend the full consequences.

xxxxxHe and Rebel were similar in the fights, as he had heard from the gossiping of other wolves and from Olek himself. They had both lost to an adult in their first match, but by the judging of the on-lookers had miraculously passed the first round. The second round, however, was a different story. Icarus thought that the adolescent nearby was likely a strong warrior, as Rouqie herself had surrendered to him. A strong femme as Rouqie would not admit defeat unless her opponent was formidable. He set his jaw, his second match had not gone well. The sense of triumph was lacking as he felt he had neither truly won nor had he proven himself. A heart-breaking finale nearly destroyed his mind. His mentor was gone, simply gone, after he himself had brutally attacked him. Icarus couldn't help feeling that A'cuil death was his fault.

xxxxxAs the deep sound of his opponents voice snaked through the fog around him, Icarus realized that this match was not one he could let his mind wander in. The previous ones had allowed him time to think as he waited for the other wolf to approach. Here, he needed to be alert at all times. Icarus took a wide stance; he placed his paws far apart and crouched to the ground. His pale-blue nose twitched as he tried to sniff out his opponent, however, the moisture of the water that clung to the air smelled clear. The slight scent of wolf in the mix was so diluted, it could have even been himself. "And the fog." He said, mostly breathing the sentence to calm his mind.

xxxxxIcarus swiveled his head in an attempt to locate the dark mass. His ears turned in all directions, and his nostrils breathed the air deeply. A slight sound of crunch caught his attention, but it had been so quiet that he could not dicern the direction in which it came. It was then he realized he had to move. Haven Pack insticts overcame him as he padded in the direction her considered the safest. He knew it wasn't best to charge blindly into the fog, on the hopes of landing a blow on his opponent.

(( So no damage? xD ))

((uh, well, I actually put "planned to surprise him" as a sort of "If I succeed in the roll, he'll surprise him" thing. No physical damage, but he did succeed in what I was going for..))

Keeping his pawsteps light, Rebel continued to stalk around with his ear trained to the ground. He could just make out the orange wolf's steps, but the sound was gradually moving away as Icarus started to move. Rebel set to following him, picking up speed. He could just barely scent the air, but the heavy smell of Spirit River nearly rendered even that sense useless. To think, a canine without their sense of smell! It was almost criminal. But, the pebbles under their paws were just enough that they weren't just running around blindly in the fog. They still had some manner of finding each other.

Rebel decided to put this theory to a quick test. He thought he was fast approaching the other adolescent, as he could glean the sounds of two sets of pawsteps on the slippery dampness of the ground. He knew which set belonged to him. Rebel reared up on his back legs and attempted to "tag" the other wolf with his paws.

xxxxxIt had only been the slight crunch from behind him that alerted Icarus to the presence of the wolf. The brown adolescent's back paws had sunk into the pebbles as his weight had shifted and the pebbles beneath him rubbed against each other. His forest-born instincts called him to the side and he narrowly dodged the Sure-Claws paws. Icarus noted that the wolf's initial attack had not been aiming for a point of weakness. It had been a blind swipe into the air. But what he did realize was that the wolf had a means of finding his likely location whereas he hadn't a clue the beast had been lurking behind him.

xxxxThe brown-gray brute was near him now, the lightest scent of the north passed through his nose and he turned his entire body in that direction. The faintest outline of a creature mere metres from him brought a snarl to his lips. It was about time that this Alpha Tournament had come to an end. Whatever the outcome of this match, Icarus could be sure that he was satisfied. If he won, then he was able to protect those he loved. If he lost, then he knew someone stronger than him would be able to protect them even better. It struck him odd, though, that it seemed the wolf hadn't truly tried to strike him. A testing swipe almost, in a battle where everything counted.

xxxxIcarus preferred not to lose sight of Rebel in this fog. Those intimidating eyes had the advantage of stealth in this terrain, that which he lacked. He took careful steps forward, trying to appear as though he were not preparing for an attack, but rather aimlessly trying to locate the source of the paw. After a few steps forward, his stomach clenched, as did his muscles. A light pain pricked at his mind as pains of wounds from the past battle leeched away his energy. Round two had been especially painful. He had survived half the match without a single scratch, but the she-warrior that was near death had changed that. However, only when he begged her to truly fight.

xxxxxWith a snort, he decided that the time was now. No more fears of the Sure-Claws, no more overthinking his attacks. He would try with some surprise, no showy snarls of frustration. No, that would be kept mental for the time being. The faint outline was still there, and the scent caught his attention. Through the damp scent of the nature around him, the faintest smell identified the wolf and thus, he lunged. Unsure of exactly where he was attacking, he bore down on the figure with his paws.

And just like that, Rebel's paws connected with nothing but air and solid stone as Icarus out-maneuvered him. That canine sure was quick! He felt his paw-pads slip a bit on the slick rock beneath him as he came down, forcing him to adjust his balance. In the moment that Rebel had been above his opponent, he had seen a flash of bright orange fur, and then nothing but fog again. The other wolf had disappeared once again into the mists. Rebel gave a soft snort at his lost element of surprise. Oh well, he thought. If he's better than me, everyone is just luckier to have him.

And then he felt himself being shoved mightily from the side. Paws, he realized, slightly dazed as he ended up pressed against the ground. His head had knocked against the ground as it connected during his fall, and the wolf had to take an extra moment to realize what just happened. He didn't feel like Icarus had taken a bite out of him, so it must have been just paws. In other words, Icarus had succeeded in the attack which Rebel had just failed.

"Good one," he remarked, from the ground. The wolf gave a wriggle and flailed his legs in the air to try and push Icarus off him.

xxxxxIcarus had been shocked at the might his charge had. Rebel fell to the ground beneath his paws, for a moment, he was in disbelief. He had brought the brown-gray wolf to the ground so quickly. Icarus realized he had a chance against this Sure-Claw, one he felt the absence of in both the first and second match of the tournament. The feeling soon disappeared however, as the wolf beneath him regained his bearings and began to wriggle out of his hold. Pushing his paws down to the ground, he hoped to keep the brute to the ground. Releasing him would likely let him escape into the mist once more.

xxxxxThe retaliation was more than he had expected. He had only managed to keep the intimidating creature to the ground for a few seconds before a very powerful kick caught his left shoulder and pushed him off. The orange adolescent topled backwards as he lost his balance, the past wound throbbed. Pebbles beneath him embraced him in an unforgiving landing, hard rock contacted his body. They gave away slightly, as the little spaces between the pebbles were quickly closed. That brought some relief to Icarus, knowing that the damage could have been worse.

xxxxx"Nice kick." He said, panting. The compliment was not out of courtesy to what Rebel had said before. That kick was strong -it had sent him almost flying. Clearly, the muscles beneath the rugged fur were well built and solid in contrast to his new, and much weaker muscles. Icarus could only pray that somehow speed would be in his favour.

xxxxAs quickly as his shoulder would allow, he rose to his feet. The distance between him and his opponent had been cleared of fog from the tossing of his body. However, the mist was reaching out, grasping at the empty expanse, and quickly closing it. He tensed his muscles and returned to attack once more. The quicker the pace of this battle went, the better, he thought. Lips peeled back and hackles raised, Icarus went after the brown-gray wolf's fur-covered neck.

He rolled himself to his feet, shaking stray pebbles out of his fur. His kick had been stronger than anticipated, but he figured it wise to get Icarus far enough away that the wolf couldn't launch another attack while Rebel was still on the ground. Rebel found that he somewhat liked this little exchange that was taking place in the misty openness here. It was sort of like a game. The near-blindness of it all was a challenge, but that's what made things fun. He had nothing personal against Icarus, and he thought the other wolf probably felt the same about him. His head and one side of his body were still faintly throbbing from where he had hit the ground before, but it all added to the charm of the fight, he supposed. Or perhaps he was just going slightly batty.

Out of the fog, Rebel saw the orange wolf coming for him again. He held up a paw to try and defend against the attack, knowing that he could not leap out of the way quick enough. His reflexes felt slower after that fall to the ground, but Icarus was just coming too quick for him to avoid it. As he felt jaws biting into the flesh of his neck, Rebel roared out in pain. His cry echoed around them as it reverberated from the wall of the cliff. He had to attempt to dislodge his opponent, and the small rational part of his brain was being heavily outweighed by the larger part which only knew that pain equaled bad, and he wanted to escape the pain. Instead of trying to move with Icarus so he wouldn't tear his own neck more by pulling away, Rebel started twisting his head around to bite at Icarus's face. He had been bitten there by Rouqie too, but he would not reflect on this until much later, after the battle.

xxxxxIcarus had finally begun to enjoy this battle. So far they had seemed evenly matched, he felt this was the first true battle he had experience in the tournament. Both sides were willing to fight and the strength of their muscles seemed relatively even. Charging at his opponent spurred him on, the air around them hummed. Moments before he landed his jaws on the neck of the Sure-Claw, Icarus swore he could see what appeared to be light amusement on his face. It sparked inside him that he too, likely bore a similar expression. He felt that while this wolf had stirred up trouble in the clearing previously, that there would likely be no qualms between him and others after this match.

xxxxxAs his jaw latched onto the rugged fur of Rebel's neck, he was surprised to have felt a metallic taste of blood so soon. Icarus had driven more force than required into his bite, thinking that the rough pelt of the wolf would provide a little protection against his incisors. He almost felt guilty for tearing at him so brutally... Almost. Still, this was a match between the two to decide who would lead the pack. He had decided to not let his mentor's passing go on in vain. Although he had not seen A'cuil drown, he figured somehow that the spotted wolf was gone. Still, some part of him told him that he was still alive, somewhere.

xxxxThe wolf in his maw began to rage about, tearing side to side and opening the wound further. Frightened from such a display, Icarus pulled back slightly, unlatching his mouth from the fur. That slight movement allowed him barely enough space to dodge the twisting jaws headed towards him. As they snapped inches from his face, a surge of confidence came upon him, one he found difficult to bat down. He had landed two successful attacks, and dodged his opponent for a second time.

xxxxxHowever, it was not time to congratulate himself yet. He steeled his nerves and locked the confidence in a box, he would likely need it in the future. Pale-blue eyes peered at the intimidating eyes, for a moment he felt paralyzed by the look. He gulped. This was not a time to falter beneath the gaze of the Sure-Claw. A growl overcame him and he threw himself at the wolf's side once more, using more paws than his fangs.

Despite the stinging pain in his neck which was now oozing blood, Rebel was gaining a bit of sense back. He began to realize that thrashing about was only hurting him and not having any effect on Icarus. In fact, as the orange wolf released his neck, Rebel let out a long growl, more at himself than the other adolescent. He should have known better than to panic in a situation like this. Now that he could breathe properly again, Rebel showed his teeth a faint moment before he was once again pushed to the ground.

Rebel landed on his back under orange-and-white paws, hitting his head again and having the wind knocked out of him. He almost laughed at being beaten so badly. That would have almost qualified for a combination move. It wasn't anything more than he had expected, and at the same time, he was impressed. The rogue had roughly scraped by each match until now. Icarus was the better fighter. He was satisfied at Icarus's fortitude and ability to pin him like this, which no adult before him had done in Rebel's recollection. Had it been an adult, his need to defy the older one would have won out over his rational mind. Icarus was clearly good for the pack, and Rebel was pleased that he was the one who had outlasted the other adults.

"You really know how to give a wolf a head injury," he quipped. "I give up. Congratulations, alpha."

xxxxxOnce more, Icarus landed a successful attack. He pinned the brown-gray wolf down on the pebbles below, the rocks grinding against each other created a lounch crunch as he hit them. Had the wolf beneath him been an adult, he would've likely attacked with his jaws more than his paws. Icarus had a strong urge in his heart to prove himself to the adults, that he was capable and just as strong as them, even when he wasn't. Facing off against a wolf his age allowed him to use his true strength and not try to use simply brute force blindly. This match had allowed him to do what he could not in the past two battles, truly fight.

xxxxxHe was completely shocked by the wolf's surrender. Pale-blue eyes went wide but not because he realized that he had earned the rank of alpha, but that Rebel had given up. Rebel's name meant to go against authority, and if he gave up, then authority was Icarus. He pulled away from the brown-gray wolf and looked into those intimidating eyes, trying not to flinch away from them. For a moment he was silent. Then he broke into a wolfish grin. He had not once been accepted as a suitable leader by the wolves he had faced. They questioned his age and his experience. "You still have one hell of a kick." He said with a huff, smiling all the same. Then, he lowered his head respectfully to the wolf as he waited for him to rise, knowing that the wolf before him would become a Beta.

xxxxStill, he had some doubt. Was he truly the one fit for the position of alpha? Had the adults been right? Should he have won? Questions swirled in the back of his mind, no matter how much he tried to stamp them out. The words of others, the looks he had received, they all stung. Yes, he had won. But did he truly deserve it? His cerulean eyes flicked to the ground. Only time could tell.
