I wouldn't even be doing band anymore if it wasn't for me wanting to be field commander next year. I just want to help the other kids with their band issues and be a good example as a leader, but they all hate me for some unknown reason. If they don't hate me then everything that happens in the same room that I'm in is awkward. People will go out of their way to stop whatever game their playing, stop their conversations, or even walk away just because I walk in the room or towards them. I haven't done anything to anyone and most of these people I've known since early middle school. What should I do?

Do you have a group of friends in band? Even if some people hate you or whatever, you always have your friends to fall back on. smile
And it shouldn't be about social drama! If you enjoy being a leader to others, even if not all of them agree, you should do what you feel is right. And, of course, if you enjoy playing your instrument, you should definitely stay. :]

I've counted and recounted all the people that are my friends in band. There are 58 or more people in band and I have counted 8 that will talk to me when they don't need something and one or two are leaving.
I do like playing my instrument, but I'd prefer not to play in marching band but it's a requirement. I'm just sick and tired of everyone treating me like crap and calling me a dictator because I won't give them a break when the rest of the band breaks. We're the pit, we're inside until our director tells us to set up outside on the 'Giant Frying Pan'. But I'd also like to try my hand at a job so I can pay for college. I'm not going to play in college so I don't see a big problem with quitting, but even the director is hesitant at talking to me unless he needs something or we're the only ones in the room or something. Otherwise he doesn't really talk to me.
I've been in band for 5 years now and haven't had any problems until now. It was fine until I started to lead the pit. I was the only qualified person to lead them and I was a better leader than the official percussion section leader. If anyone needed something that had to do with percussion they'd ask me instead of him, so I can't figure why people treat me like crap.
