    YOU KNOW I LOVE HOW MY INTERNATIONAL ROOMMATE TOPIC TURNED INTO DISCUSSING BLACK PEOPLE.
    WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I GET A NIGERIAN ROOMMATE?

Roommates are fun! I was so nervous about meeting mine last year but I got really lucky, she's so sweet! She's a year younger than me, and she was home schooled her entire life all the way up until college. Her family's very involved in their church too so she has very high morals, although sometimes they're a little stiff for me. We got along great from the get-go and we're gonna be roommates again this year. It was like gaining a sister, cause at night we lie in our beds in the dark and talk until we fall asleep.

I do think I was one of the lucky few tho, cause most of my other friends didn't really socialize with their roommates, if they even liked them. It just depends on both of yall's personalities and how much you're both willing to compromise when it comes to disagreements. Since your roommate is international I bet yall will get along fine. She won't know anyone, and you probably won't either, but you'll at least have each other. (:

    That's something I took into consideration. I know for a fact that no one from my school district will be attending the same college as me (most in my graduating class won't even be going out of state) and my mom said, "Oh, well, it's good that you'll have someone who'll most likely be as new to the area as you. You'll have each other for support and if you don't want to drive two seven-hour drives on the three-day weekends, you and your roommate, who probably won't fly out on three day weekends can hang out together." Which, could be good. c:

    I'm glad that you liked your roommate and are going to get the same one again this year. I really hope I get one who I can establish a good, friend-basis relationship with too. :3 Like, what did you do the first day you moved in together? Introductions and all of that? Did you talk to her on the internet or via phone beforehand? When did you get comfortable living together? I kind of want to be as not-awkward as possible when the day comes. ^^;;

First impressions with a stranger in a new are always awkward!

I agree with your mom that sounds like a really good idea. C:

As far as getting to know each other, my school has a stupid policy about not letting you know who your roommate is until you meet them on move-in day. > sad It turned out to be fine tho cause she and her family came in a little after I did with mine. Our moms got to talking and it went pretty smoothly. We were both still kind of shy at that point. She lives pretty close to the school so all they did was set up her refrigerator and left to finish moving in the next day. I got all moved in on that first day and had to spend my first night alone and I'll tell you right up front it was kinda scary, I don't think I slept three hours. It probably took us about a week to get used to each other. We went to meals together and talked about our classes. My dorm is a suite-style, meaning two rooms are connected by a bathroom which is shared by all four girls. We and our suitemates stuck together for the first week of school.

I think the biggest thing that brought us together was the fact that we were both freshmen and we had no idea what we were doing and what to expect. That kinda built a kinship between us that made it not awkward. Since your roommate is coming from a different country I suggest you ask about her day to day life and what her family is like and just exchange cultures. I remember being super scared that I was gonna get some loud ghetto girl that would be stealing my stuff or makin noise at all hours of the night but it all turned out okay. I think once you meet her everything will go smoothly. n.n
