Well...I'm not a musician, but I honestly don't understand the point of playing a game about playing an instrument instead of just playing the instrument.
I feel the same way about sports games.
At the same time, the customisation options can be fun (though I honestly don't know what sort of customisation they have in Rock Band, so I'm speaking in general,) and I suppose there are more people who like to engage in the fantasy of being in a band, but don't actually want to be in one in reality.
I don't think it's bad, really, but at the same time, it's not my thing at all.

The Atroxious Well...I'm not a musician, but I honestly don't understand the point of playing a game about playing an instrument instead of just playing the instrument. I think the point is, some people have no talent for playing instruments whatsoever. Just like some people have no talent for drawing, singing, whatever. At least with rock band people can "pretend" that they can play guitars and whatever. EDIT: Didn't realize I said "whatever" that many times in that short little blurb. XP

I've been a pianist for 8 years and I love Guitar Hero/Rock Band!
I don't view it as playing an instrument, just a fun rhythm game with some great tunes. I don't take it too seriously and neither does the game.
Plus it gets some pretty good songs out there in the gaming world. I'm sure that it also encouraged some kids to try their hand at a real guitar too.

XP Honestly, I don't believe in talent. I think some people are faster learners at some things, but I really hate the term "talent". I've never been what you would call talented when it comes to drawing, but I do care about it, and I've worked at learning what I needed to know, so I wound up with a decent amount of skill, and have apparently inspired people through my work and my characters despite everything. But that's really another debate altogether. I just think that if someone was really interested in being a musician, they'd pick up an instrument. The game itself seems more like an escapist fantasy than anything else. (Spoken as though I don't consume more than my fair share of escapist fantasy every day.) Heh heh, that really was an excessive amount of "whatevers" for a post of that size.

Rock Band and all Music/Rhythm games have such a stunning impact on the music industry. They are defiantly beneficial for both the music industry and the video game industry. Rock Band is smart. Not only do they have licenses with MTV Studios which allows them such a diverse setlist of music, but hey set up a thing called Rock Band Network which allows small bands to participate and submit songs and get the word out about their bands out there to everyone who plays rock band. Plus Rock Band is such a great outlet for music because you learn about new bands that you have never heard of that range from hippie bands in the 60's to Nu-Metal bands that became popular in the late 2000's. I am grateful i started playing Rock Band because without it i would of never discovered my great love of Rush haha. I would of never listened to them or known about them if it wasnt for Rock Band
And when it comes to picking up a real instrument instead of a plastic one its true that you wont get the same experience as if you got a real quitar but i love that Harmonix is changing that with Rock Band 3. They actually have a REAL fender guitar that incorporates a new mode in Rock Band that teaches you how to play real quitar, drums, even keyboard haha.
All im saying is that Rock Band is way more beneficial to a multi array of industries than most people are aware of. Plus its just rock out to a song that you otherwise wouldnt be able to in real life :3

OMN_2 I've been a pianist for 8 years and I love Guitar Hero/Rock Band! I don't view it as playing an instrument, just a fun rhythm game with some great tunes. I don't take it too seriously and neither does the game. Plus it gets some pretty good songs out there in the gaming world. I'm sure that it also encouraged some kids to try their hand at a real guitar too. Like, the same way Manhunt and GTA helped encourage depressed kids to go out on killing sprees! biggrin Honestly though, I have mixed feelings about those games. It shows people that don't like rock and handful of good songs and a handful of bad songs. This in turn created hipster fags ((No offense to any actual gay people)) That go around and say how they love a couple of rock bands.....For like 4 songs. You DON'T "LOVE" a band or say you're a "fan" for a few well known songs. Fan is short for fanatic so someone who has several shirts, a shitload of CD's and went to a few concerts and the whole 9 yards, can say they're a fan. Given, there's nothing wrong with liking a band for a few songs, its just that they took something that was almost being shunned upon and forgotten and brought it into this fake limelight and glory where EVERYONE knows Iron Maiden for Run to the hills, and Green Day for American idiot etc.... I'm not even sure what I'm saying anymore..... basically, those games are fun, but don't let it get to your head. It's a game, some of the levels in that game are harder to play then on an actual guitar or bass, or the other way around. ALSO, rock isn't something that is or really ever was "mainstream" or "hip". It's always had this underground shine. Music these days are like blinds and earplugs to the world for all the sheep. It's in the older tunes that we can find a meaning again in music that is significant. Rock band does not deliver...... .........How was that for a rant?....................... Sorry OMN_2 for putting all of this in a quote. lol.

This Guild topic is so illiterate I had to read it three times to know what you were talking about. >.<
I found Guitar hero to be pretty simple when it's on the medium/easy level. xD

I play guitar, bass and drums. I have to admit I suck hard core at any of the simulation band games.
Can. Not. Do.
Physicaly impossibility, not because I hate it, just because I'm video game incapable.
I don;t think it's ruining or helping music. I think it's just a way to kill some time, which is fine by me. Or rather if you're me, kill self esteem.
