It was very depressing. Next eyar is gonna be sooo different...

First of all, we got another new guard isntructor. she looks like a whore.

Also, our principle quit last amrching season. We just now got a new one, and he is changing a lot. he has cracked down hard on the drug problem at our school. He is definately good for our school. He also supports fine arts, especially band.

New football coach. Our old one got our school to state championships the past couple years. And our old one was in drumline in highschool. we had a tradition where on Homecoming he would play the fight song on his special designated snare drum with the band.

Now the biggest part of the changes:
OUR BD IS MOVING!!!!! He is leaving us for the state capital city and switching to middle school band.
Hes been in our band for 7 years now. He has brought our program sooo far! When he came, band was literally a joke. kids took it because it was constant subs, no permanant teacher. They could do whatever. Teachers ran from that position. Until our bd came. When he first got there, he was right out of college. Worried, the school staff asked the choir director to keep a secret eye on him. She knew he was fine by tthe 2nd day. He walked in and whipped them into shape. he toelrated nothign. he got rid of all the ad kids who didn't want to be there. 35 people were left. With those 35 people, he has brough our band to the top 10 in the entire state in our division. We now have around 80 people, and we will only get larger since this years sneior band population is 4. So we will loose 4 next year and gain 20+.
Anyway, this past season we got a superior at this particular festival for the first time in 20 years. All because our bd had managed to control those students his first year. He gets stuff done while making us laugh. i love him. He is by far my favorite teacher.

And now he is leaving. And we don't have a replacement yet. Because of budget cuts, a lot of teachers were let go. some were promised a new teaching job at a different school. According to law, they have to see if there is a qualfied teacher for our band in that group first. If there is, law requires we take that person. Whether they be a good bd or not. If there is not a qualified teacher in that pool of teachers, then our bd is gonna help interview new bds to find the best one for us.

I do really like soemthing he said when he first told us he was elaving:
"I did not play the music. I did not step foot on the competition field. It was all you. If you work hard like you did this year, it doesn't matter who your director is. Its all you. All i do is make sure you have somethign to work on."

This year has changed soo much. But I know that if we all approach it right, we can still ahve a good time. We wills till be a family. My camp was compeltely different from past years, and some people hated it because they approached it wrong. Lets just hope things go well with this...

Hey I feel for you. Our bd got pink slipped and has to teach math. He's only been at our school for 4 years and because he's only been in the district that long, he's getting kicked out of his position.

Luckily he'll see us at band camp.

Your band director sounds so amazing. I definitely agree with what he said because honestly, the BD is only there to guide you, support you, help you learn, teach you, and make you a better musician than you already are.

I come from a small town where the band is heavily underappreciated by the school, the community, and the athletics department. The fact that one of your previous coaches would play with the band at halftime makes me want to jump for joy.

My BD my senior year reminds me of your BD. He changed so many attitudes, made people who did nothing for our program leave, turned around the community's opinion of us, and somehow motivated people to join...people who hated other directors we had that never wanted to play again joined.

I'm sorry that your BD is leaving, but like he said, it's what the band did that makes it so great. I hope that you have another amazing BD (because I know we've all had crappy ones) and that your band continues its many successes for years to come ^^

I know exactly how you feel.
Our band had an amazing director. He was so well-educated, super nice, hilarious, and a professional drill writer.
He was just great. He taught everyone sooo much about music.
With him we almost always got first place, 1 ratings, etc.
We were the best band in our class and could beat the AAA and AAAA bands in competition with ease, and we were only A one year and AA another.
Then he left us after our best and most rewarding year yet. With no warning or anything. He just moved on.
It was really really hard and 3 years later we still haven't really moved past it.

We got a new director that was really good after him.
We still got grand champion awards and stuff.
But then he slept with the senior piccolo player and got fired.
Now we have another new director, and he's changing everything.
It's hard to go through and we've lost members because they don't think he will be good enough. :/

So I know what it's like to lose a director that you really like.
It's super tough, but there's nothing you can do about it.
You just have to stay strong and work with everyone else in the band to stay positive and try to keep things as normal as you can.
Like your director said, it IS all you that makes the band.
I hope everything works out okay for your band! heart

I'm so sorry you're losing so many great supportants.
At least your new principal is very supportive, that's a plus.

I can't imagine what my school would be like if my director had to leave. He's been with us since the school opened seven years ago, we have seriously known NO other director.
Under him we've grown from a 35 person marching band that got superior in its teeny division to a 120 person marching band which got a superior for the first time since.

Our upper ensemble band has nearly always cleaned the floor at concert Festival, and this year was the first time BOTH ensembles mopped the floor with straight Superiors.

I can't imagine how our program would go without his support and insane seriousness. And no matter what, I still wish he had time to teach music theory...that would make the class bearable. But I digress.

It's like your director said. The quality of the band depends on your dedication and care. Even if the BD isn't as good as your old one, they can and will learn if you help them.

I wish you the best of luck with your new teacher; it'll all turn out alright as long as very few people lose faith in him/her.

Ouch! I'm sorry to hear that. Change is never fun, especially change away from something that's always so great!

We're losing our Percussion director and most of our guard staff next year. sad Our BD, who came my freshman year, has been little short of awful, and the only logical person left will be our Jazz director. *sigh*
