{new kid on the block}
Ahem, I am a weather geek
and also monitor the CDC and other disease news,
and I regret to caution you about the following:
Canine influenza (that jumped species barrier from horses)
has no vaccine or cure except nursing,
CDC doesn't think it would infect humans
unless it recombines.
H5N1 avian influenza has been shown
to infect all birds and mammals
(fish are still unknown)
wink but dogs or cats eating birds dead of flu
is the most likely vector to spread the virus
in North America, other than some sick person
on a jet flight.
If your pet eats a dead animal (or sick animal
that is slow enough to get caught)
-- especially if said pet gets sick within a day or two --
please be very careful and
* wash your hands frequently with soap and water
* don't handle your pet and then touch eyes or mouth
* keep kids away!!
* keep the sick pet away from other animals
* if you get sick, go to the ER and tell the docs the cause
before breathing on them.
I am lucky, my cats are old and retired from hunting.
