I'm doing an english report on media and my whole thing was on whether or not Riot Grrls actually portray a positive image of women, and I think before I jump to conclusions about whether they do or don't I'd like to know what YOU think are the values most important to Riot Grrls and if they're actually expressed in the music.
For example, is a song about sex less degrading if it's written by a Riot Grrrl band and features a lesbian couple? Is a song about sex degrading anyways?
Alas, I'm rambling. Your thoughts?

I dunno really I get your predicament I think it probably is the same thing just a different potrayal women see one side of it and men see the other of course to someone who doesn't get those perseptions it just seems like nothing but if your the person listening to or writing that music it's an extreme thing!!

i don't think a song about sex is inherently degrading at all. the way the song portrays sex is more of the issue. after all, it is something natural and (i think) beautiful.
i think riot grrrl, like the feminist movement, is a lot about equality for men and women. it's also about being able to do whatever you want with your life - not being automatically relegated to a housewife or a part-time secretarial job due to the fact that you're a woman, for example.
the music deals a lot with issues particular to women. for example, "star bellied boy" and "i like ********" deal with rape. (i'm not saying that it's impossible for a man to be raped, but it's much more common among women.)
and they can deal with more general things. "white girl", for example, talks about racism.
