"This is the story my mother used to tell me when I was a youngling." Sorrel smiles at those listening. "She'll still tell it to me now, if I ask her to." She clears her throat, then begins the tale as her mother always does.
Long and long ago, and longer still all Kimeti looked the same. Not in color or pattern, but in shape. All does looked the same. All bucks looked the same. Each had the same horns, tail, scales and other features that make us up.
Then one day while the MotherFather was creating a clutch she realized she was bored with the sameness. So instead of the same two horns, she decided that just one would look nice. This one was placed in the center of a baby boy's forehead. The next in the clutch was given a shorter tail, with an extra fluffy tail tuft. The third in the clutch received long fur on both head and all four legs, to cover the hooves.
When these three grew and mated they passed on these traits to some of their children. Those children, in their turn, grew and had children. Who also got some of these traits.
Generations passed and these differences started working their way into more and more Kimeti. Still they were few, and the MotherFather had more ideas. So she worked on another clutch.
This one contained five, and each got a gift. One got a longer tail, another got a tail of fur. One got four horns, another got large spiraled horns. The last got nothing new, but was changed none the less. For she had no back scales.
As with the first three, these five had children, who had children, and so on. With each new generation these differences were passed on to at least some in the clutch. And as time wore on, separation from those who originally had a difference changed it. So four long horns may become four short horns. Or one horn may gain a spiral, a curve, become shorter or long. Hair, on head, legs or even as a tail may gain or lose length. Be curled or straight.
And that's why some of us look different.
