Hi guys, I was interested in starting a charity for building schools across the globe. Problem is, I've never started a charity before. I don't even have a name for it! But, I do have a mission: Education is a vital component to ending poverty in under-developed countries. Education brings empowerment, and with it, children become students become experts in fields and movers and shakers of society. Children who go to school are given the opportunity to rise above societal expectations, and feel confident in their accomplishments. I sponsor a girl in Guatemala through the Mayan Families charity. The day I got a picture of her graduating preschool, I got misty-eyed, seeing how happy she was. Now she'll be continuing on to first grade, and I plan to support her and the two-year old I'm also sponsoring all the way through college. I can't wait to see them grow up to be strong, independent women.
So- for the betterment and education of today's youth- from supplying sub-standard schools with supplies and much-needed funds, to building entirely new schools all across the world. Who's with me?

I've always wanted to be involved with something like this as well. unequal education around the world is something I have major issues with.
I went to Jamaica last year and visited several schools. It is a difficult system to succeed in because standardized testing is required to advance to the next level. However, many families can only afford to send their kids to school a few times a week becaue of the cost of taking the school bus, and school supplies. So they end up missing so much of the material they cannot pass the test to get into high school. There are other things messed up about the school system too, like some teachers will just skip school. When I talked to the kids there they all had really big dreams, like becoming doctors, politicians, pilots, and pharmacists. I hope they make it despite the difficulties.
I'm not sure how one would go about starting a charity like this either, but if it's your dream then I encourage you to pursue it because there is a huge need for better education in the world.

Thanks so much for your belief in the cause and your support. I really hope I can make it somewhere with this- because I know how blessed I am to have higher education in my life, and I want to share the gift of knowledge with the rest of the world. Because I want to be a ESOL teacher (English for Speakers of Other Languages), I say that I will travel the world, spreading English wherever I go. wink Really, knowledge is power, and I can only hope that there will be some who believe that enough to aid this cause.

You don't have to wait until you can go to another country to teach English. I found a TESOL program near me and I volunteer at it on mondays. There are lots of immigrants that want to learn English.

God-willing, I'll get paid this year, but even if I don't, I'll be more than happy to continue to volunteer.
