I think you may know Amanda, In Media Res? She brought this to my attention some weeks ago in a thread in another guild. I re-watched it today and decided to post it here ninja Basically, Flanders (crazy Xtian guy) tries to get the famous Homer Simpson closer to God, and offers to pay for the Simpson's to go to Israel. From there, the calamity ensues. Here is a link to watch it.If that does not work, I will be happy to provide another link. I have heard two sides: 1) Some Jews were offended. 2) Some were not. In a recent personal discussion, a friend in Israel found it quite amusing. Comments? Questions?

I have been a fan of the Simpsons for over a decade, and that's the very first episode set in a war zone in which only one side was ridiculed. It is not like the Simpsons to paint the PLO in the best light possible while making the IDF look like total brutes, nor to make constant Jewish jokes while letting Arabs off Scott free. I expected the Simpsons to paint the PLO and the IDF with the same brush and make about as many Arab jokes as Jewish jokes. But nope. I was severely disappointed. The Simpsons have finally jumped the shark.

I saw it when it first aired on TV. I didn't feel offeneded by it. I also knew some of the stuff wasn't true while other parts were.

If every group made fun of by comedians (or comedic shows) got offended upon hearing the material, comedy would die very quickly.
I would miss Southpark if that were the case. and Big Bang Theory and How I Met Your Mother and.... etc

It's David X Cohen. A Jew what do you expect? And I do find it a bit funny considering Israelis really do talk that way.

I was really offended by it. I know, I know, "it's just comedy, they make fun of everyone," but this particualr epsidoe seemed especially tasteless to me. Even Family Guy, with nerdy Mort the Jew and "When you wish upon a Weinstein" is more tasteful than this episode, which is saying a LOT. Family Guy always makes fun of the Jews, but at least they do it tastefully. And they also make fun of EVERYBODY else, unlike the Simpsons.

Gotta disagree there, It may have taken many more seasons but if you watch enough episodes you'll see The Simpsons have insulted everyone too.

And you know the damned thing? If there wasn't a single Jew joke in that episode, but the PLO and the Arabs were the butt of all the jokes, then that episode would have been called Zionist propaganda. There'd have been a bomb set off over it. Someone may have been killed over it. The fact is that Jews are safe targets and Arabs just aren't. This was elaborated by the Simpsons during one of the chalkboard gags, when Bart wrote: "We'd stand with you, Southpark, but we're too scared." That's the simple fact. The Simpsons haven't made fun of Arabs or Muslims once in several seasons because they're too scared. But what will Jews do, boycott Fox? Write an angry letter? But you can do anything these days when it comes to Jews. You can claim that the "Dome of the Rock" is sacred to "all three religions" -- a blatant insult, courtesy of the Simpsons. You can gloss over crimes committed against Jews while simultaneously portraying Jews as violent and brutal. You can pull out every neo-Nazi stereotype in the book* and call it comedy. Draw a picture of Mohammad, on the other hand, and you can expect people to start dying. *Yes, I have unfortunately had to deal with neo-Nazis, and they love that particular episode of the Simpsons. They ruined it for me by pointing out inside jokes in that episode which I don't even care to repeat.

Ok the point of the whole thing was that Flanders took Homer & the Simpsons to Israel in order to experience the holy land and see if he could inspire them to be more respectful of their religion.
However, Homer Simpson was Homer Simpson, as was Bart, and took turns desecrating sacred spaces.
Now granted, riding your skateboard across the wailing wall and taking a nap in the holy sepulcher are grievous desecrations for everyone, you have to remember that it was a cartoon and just a story.
What is important to know is that the message I got out of it was "You shouldn't take religious matters too seriously or not seriously enough."

I will continue to watch the Simpsons because they are usually quite funny, but this episode was terribly offensive.
