death angel712 Chaotik Joker RP bulletmaster36 true true, but shotguns are still my favorite. and thanks for catching that typo Well, the Judge is basically a revolver shotgun. Yea but what's a little .410 compared to a 12 gauge? I'm not arguing with you, I think the Taurus Judge is a better choice for home defense than a regular shotgun, but just because it fires shotgun shells doesn't mean is has the same advantage as a regular 12 gauge. Yeah, well, it's not the pellets that make the biggest holes. It's the chunk of hard plastic that holds them in. And a Judge doesn't even have to do shotgun.

A pistol is a faster reload than a shotgun or revolver even with a speedloader. Would you rather have a heavier less accurate 357 or an 9mm that has more accuracy more lightweight and only takes a few seconds to reload ( if your mags already have ammo in them )

I have a 357 revolver, Its a ruger gp 100, The weight is good because it reduces kick back and promotes accuracy. I keep it loaded with hollow points, my revolver is very accurate and I'm not going to need more than 6 shots to take out an intruder especially with hollow points. I've shot aromatics as well, before I owned my ruger I had a Springfield XD 45 compact, that my fiancée and I later traded in for the Ruger. Although the gun was a very reliable automatic theirs still the chance no mater how slim that the casing could jam the gun, plus that gun was no good for the range because ammo cost too much, this gun is good for home defense and range. Aside from all that I simply like revolvers better, that's not to say that I'll never again own an automatic but for defense I would rather have a revolver.

It's overkill for a human target, and the much greater recoil drastically reduces rate of fire.

I say 12 gauge is the best home defense weapon. You can mount a light and there are a lot of options with ammo. it's been said that depending on your area a less than lethal round loaded first may keep you out of jail. Many shotgun shells are designed for specific tasks they have a very wide range of options. Some offer large spread meaning your walls could get peppered while others are made for home use with tighter pasterns. If you go with a shotgun you also have the intimidation factor. There have been many accounts of the cocking of a shotgun scaring an intruder off. People know what that sound is and would rather not mess with it. A handgun would be my second choice because it covers less area and the bullets are going to penetrate more unless you are smart and use hollow points. AmmoAmmoI own a Mossberg M590A1

every time we go to the gun stores, the topic of home defense comes up, and what I got out of the conversations is shotguns are for hunting, revolvers are for defense, and semiautomatic pistols and other "large clip" guns are for killing people.
In reality, the more bullets you fire, the more likely you are to penetrate your cardboard and drywall and hit relatives or neighbors, and cops - at least the ones we talked to, are more likely to be suspicious of a semiautomatic than a revolver, probably for the same reasons.
A shotgun is bulky when going around corners and tight spaces and less easy to conceal. Even a sawed off shotgun is longer than all but hunting pistols. If you have to go with a shotgun, I would recommend a pump action, not because I know anything about shotguns or being shot at, but because I assume if you miss, you want to be able to shoot again, instead of letting the bad guy close in while you reload.

I agree. I'm not being serious when I say that its for sissies. I prefer .45 ACP and I believe that it is a superior combat round, but the 9mm no doubt gets the job done.

I have a few defense rifles and an assault rifle but those are locked away for saftey reasons. I have 2 children but for home saftey I have my glock 26 9mm at my bedside and my husband has his glock 40 compact (unsure of the model) at his bedside we have a few more handguns in the the small gun safe on his side of the bed if need be.
