The CHAOS Academy students ran and leap about, taunting and fighting each other among the recent ruins of a battlefield. The mass of youths were brought to this place as a field trip for their History of CHAOS class.
This site was the one where their former goddess had triumphed over the Clamheads (that wasn't their 'real' name, of course, but it's what was taught in HoC class).
Two students, bored with the monotone voice of their guide (trying to teach them something having to do with earthworms), wandered away from the group to do some exploring on their own.
The two came upon a large building that somewhat resembled a church, separated by a river from what looked like the tattered remains of multiple tents, guarding by what they assumed to be a huge golden shield on wheels.
While one friend tapped on the marble walls of the building, the other made his way towards the river, wanting to inspect the gold contraption. Before he made it close to the water, however, he tripped and fell face first towards the floor.
His friend heard him yell, and turned around in time to see a flash of red light. The glare was so bright he she had to avert her gaze in order to keep from going blind. When she looked back, a gigantic red portal loomed overhead, directly above where her friend had just fallen.
Terrified, she turned tail and ran back to the group, telling the guide what had happened.
"It is the portal of SIN." The elder calmly explained, though with obvious joy in his voice, "The weapon used by our lost goddess Sentinel during the war. It feeds on souls, but we stopped fueling it a few months back. It seems your friend has brought it back to life." He paused for a moment and looked up to the sky. Sure enough, the swirling mass could be seen for miles, just like before. "We used it as a destructive force, but it was a goddess's anger and hope for revenge that fueled it. Now that there is no goddess to turn it into a weapon, I wonder what it is capable of?"
After much experimentation, it was realized that the portal, no longer a destructive force, was capable of transporting through time and space.
It is now used as a means of spreading CHAOS throughout the land, and throughout time itself.
