I would really like to try to join jazz band next year, but I'm not sure which instrument I should try it on. I've been trying to learn trumpet since November (I even take lessons), but I'm really not good enough yet to be in jazz band. My main instrument is clarinet, but that isn't allowed in jazz band at my school. I'd really like to join it when school starts, though. Do you think that if I rented a sax and took lessons on it instead of continuing them on trumpet, I'd be able to play well enough to join jazz band when school starts? I know that I would be able to learn saxophone much faster than trumpet because it's very similar to clarinet, but I would appreciate it if you guys could help me make my decision.

really only you can make the decision. If you could learn saxophone faster, that'd probably be best for you.

i learned sax over the summer between 7th and 8th grade, by the end of the year i was lead alto in the jazz band. i'm not sure how good your school is compared to mine, but you should at least be able to play by the end of summer.

Go for Saxophone, but tell your director if there are any clarinet solos, which occur often in jazz pieces, that you would be more then willing to take them. Just make sure you get all your scales down, and your swing is fairly solid. In my school it'd be very hard for you to make it (we play college/professional level material), but for your school it might be a different story.

Okay, thanks, everyone. I think I'll rent a sax and see how it goes. I'm only entering high school next year, so I have no idea the level of the music that the jazz bands play there.

You should rent a sax, I'm a flute player and Ive been in jazz band for 2 years on flute but my band director wanted me to learn sax so I borrowed one from my friend and learned in 2 months working hard every day and made it. My jazz band is really hard to get in to. But if you work hard you should be able to get it. Clarinet to sax isnt as drastic as flute to sax so I'm sure you'll do fine. biggrin

I just rented a tenor today. It's really easy for me to learn so far; a billion times easier than trumpet. I'll probably be pretty good by the time school starts. Thanks for helping me make my decision, everyone.
