fire - link thing is, im not trying to be the better person, im trying to get a point of my own accross, that instead of being such an elitest towards him for having an opinion different to your own, maybe you should try to understand what it is he is trying to say (which you clearly dont) before opening your mouth. Did you read this before you posted it? This is unnecessarily harsh. I'm not trying to take sides in your argument, but I think both of you are getting too heated. Step back. In the end both of you like steampunk. You share common interests, so let's keep that in the forefront of our minds. I understand how Lasciate would be offended--I mean the guy literally wrote "******** you steampunks." That is a direct, offensive, personal attack if I ever heard one. And I understand trying to be fair, too. There are elitists within steampunk, but we're not all elitists. Would you consider yourself elitist? I woudn't consider that of myself. It's wrong to throw that kind of accusation around, especially at someone who already feels attacked and judged unfairly. Some people are just mean and elitist, and they find their way into every hobby and subculture. Let's not mimic them by fighting amongst ourselves. Keep calm and carry on.

I'm not going to jump on this guy for his hatred of Steampunk though in my opinion it seems a bit misguided.
But in a way it seems hypocritical from what he writes. His family got a taste of the country and farm life and dreamed up these high expectations of what it would be like if they fully immersed themselves into it. They did and it wasn't the small farming community they imagined with Lassie and Timmy, they came upon a close knit community that had no room or tolerance for the new 'city folk'. So their ideals and dreams were crushed with a horrible experience.
So he in turn has a hatred for Steampunk and Steampunkers for having those same ideals and ignorance about a time and place we really haven't personally experienced (since it never truly existed), like his family before they moved. And in his mind if it were it would be full of hobnobbing elitist who sends their days inventing and being social at some party while riding on the bent over and broken backs of those in poverty and the slaves/help.
I suppose he's more upset about the naivety of how we fantasize and build this subculture as something good as opposed to what it really was back then in that real era. That I can understand, nothing is quite as annoying when people ignorantly twist history around without really knowing it.
@ Kurisu of the Hellfire- Bioshock, hmm I would say it's more dieselpunk given the time, though the two tends to merge with me at a certain point. But really I'm not picky or going to go elitist on anyone about it. Though I will b***h about Hot Topic. evil Hot Topic...grr. And not because of the steampunk item thing.

I think with steampunk it might depend upon setting. One might consider their setting to be like the writer is pushing on the subculture, or some might choose to create a setting with the social norms of today, just with a technological throwback.

Now to divert the topic a bit. Thanks to the rant and the mention of Bioshock I was thinking of how interesting it would be to see a steampunk version of Bioshock only instead of underwater it could be a city in the air on an airship. An Utopia paradise that quickly falls apart.
It can start with our ideals of how the steampunk world and culture could be like, you know the geniuses and laborers rising above the towns and small minded people who toil in building the simpler things of the industrial revolution for something more.
But then of course not everyone can just invent and adventure, people are needed for those dirty jobs, and people with an elitist mindset wouldn't dare lower themselves to that but then what choice do you have until someone invents something to take care of it (but then that would be taking jobs away from the living people).
A world like that would quickly fall into what it's like on the ground. The elite and rich idly passing the time while those who are poorer or whose inventions weren't up to par labor and serve those elitist.
I can't really think of anything that would equal the sea slug, Adam, and Eves used in the game. But I can think of some insanity that would go on in the dystopian city, like a doctor who would experiment with treatments and mental cures. The hospitals and asylums in those days always sends chills up my spine.
I wounder if the ranter was to see a Steampunk world like that would he still hate it so much?

Haven't read it so I couldn't think that way more than Bioshock. And Bioshock was mentioned so that's why my mind went on that tangent.
But I'm taking a guess here in the fact that the mechanical gods were man made and somehow took over? Crap as soon as I typed that my mind was full of the plot of the Matrix and the future in Terminator.
For my own tastes I like it better when it's the people who goes crazy and controlling. Human madness, selfishness, and all of those other negative traits are much more fun than a robotic take over. And it applies more with what that blogger was pointing out.
