i really want to lean Japanese but i totally don't know where to start. i understand that it will take some years to fully learn but i am confident that i can. i want to go there one day. but i want to know the language first. and it will look good on a future job application. but that is just a bonus.

i started learning words but a friend told me that i have to start simpler than that. so i went to the alphabet. someone told me that i should not learn that first. you seam to know more than either of them so ill ask you. HELP!!

ill take any advice you will give me oh goddess of the Japanese language.

It takes years to achieve fluency, but even native speakers haven't fully learned. Personally, I think you should work on the kana first, while watching lots of anime on the side. This way, you can read the kana, then work your way to understanding it. Throw some grammar in there too. [:

What you choose to do after that is up to you, but I picked kanji.

You definitely need to learn kana first. Just like with any language, then move onto the basics, like greetings, numbers, etc. You can start learning some simple kanji along the way. You'll probably need to find out some way to memorize the more complex ones.

Kana are the Japanese alphabets, hiragana and katakana.
Hiragana is mainly used for:
- writing particles,
- writing endings of verbs and such,
- writing rarely used nouns which are not commonly known,
- writing prefixes and suffixes
- materials for children and foreigners;
While katakana is used for:
- writing words borrowed from other languages,
- proper nouns from other languages,
- onomatopoeias,
- biological, zoological and other scientifc names
- emphasis;
Hope this helps.

I'm kinda in the same boat, but I've been looking at kana mostly.

You definitely need to start learning kana when you begin. You don't have to exclusively learn kana. You can start learning basic grammar and vocab while learning the kana.
I learned Hiragana and most katakana before I started taking a class in college but in the class we were given only 3 weeks to learn all of it. that was the first 2 chapters of the Genki text book. after that it's 14ish new kanji every other week along with any number of new grammar.

I mainly just watched anime to learn some words and I got books on Hiragana, vocabulary, and basic sentence structure... That's me though.

There is so much slang and stuff not used IRL in anime. . . lol. One of my friends asked a japanese girl about some and she got a lot of funny looks . . .more funny looks than answers haha. And all of my Sempai laugh if the topic of learning from anime or drama's is brought up.
I've heard a lot of advisement against it also. .
