▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄ "...s**t."
This wasn't suppose to happen. Everything was so precise. So painstakingly perfect, that nothing should have even flickered a tiny smidgen. What he was doing was highly unorthodox, and frowned upon by human nature itself. But who was he to deny the want of the only person he had left in the world?
Simple. He couldn't.
Bones cracking filled the space; sharp and echoing throughout the small room, only barely covered by the sound of blood dripping, and organs sloshing about. A twisted hand smacked at the side of the VR machine, gripping as it tried to get out of the opened pod. Above, the light flickered and swung, taunting him with what would be a quick and painful death via electrocution- a fitting end as a paying price.
"Seto..."
It shouldn't have happened.
Months Kaiba had worked on this project; creating and building the program that would bring one back into the living world. No one knew of its existence, not even Mokuba. It was, in a sense, suppose to be a surprise for the lively younger Kaiba. Heh. Some surprise.
At first, everything seemed to be working perfectly. Kaiba looked over everything, double checked every cord, and only then did he get the systems up and running. A huge mistake on his behalf. As soon as he typed in the code to start the program, chaos broke loose. Screens started to flicker on and off, static lines running through them before they shattered, sending pieces of glass and wire everywhere. Instincts told him to get the hell out of there. Reasoning, and hellish pride told him to stay put and keep the program stable.
What screens were left was used to keep tabs on the machines while Kaiba typed away at inhuman speeds, trying to figure out just what caused everything to start to malfunction.
Warning: Virus Alert!
There...there was no way! It was impossible! He had built the protection himself, made sure everything was secure!
Click, click, click.
It was the only sound aside from the deafening one of a generator running full power. Backtracking the source of where the virus came, Kaiba only had enough time to blink and curse before the remaining screens shattered and the generator went out. Feeling around blindly, Kaiba hissed as several pieces of glass embedded themselves into his hand. Such a thing was ignored, though, as the brunette felt his way towards the automatic doors just as the back up generators for Kaiba Corp kicked on. Even the extra power he had tried to put in from a generator wasn't enough to fulfill the amount he needed.
That's what led up to the grotesque thing before him. It twitched and spasm'd, pale blood covered hands smacking at the side of the VR pod that was open wide, doing its best to crawl out into the open. What was suppose to be a young boy before him, was nothing more than a rotted corpse, torso twisted around the wrong way, not even fully developed to hold the organs that were plopping onto the floor.
"Seto! Nii-sama, are you down there?"
By the time Kaiba opened his mouth to tell Mokuba to stay away, it was all too late.
"Nii-sama!"
That shriek. That blood curling yell for him that made him sick to his stomach echoed through his head as he stayed rooted to the floor beneath him. In no more than a blink of an eye, the creature had lunged at the new sound, its fully formed jaw clamping down into his brother's neck, ripping the flesh from its rightful place and stopping the scream altogether.
It...just wasn't possible.
The sluggish creature turned, eying the one left with distaste before gazing back to the convulsing body on the floor with something that looked almost like remorse. "Mokuba..." was the hoarse whisper from somewhere within the creature. "S..Sorry..."
No. Just No.
Mokuba stopped moving, and Kaiba wouldn't be able to forget the gentle smile that was left on his brother's features as he gazed lifelessly up at his killer. Nor would the elder Kaiba be able to forget the fear that dwelled within the pit of his stomach when minutes later, Mokuba's body started to spasm once more, nails digging into the concert floor, eyes shutting then opening, a almost disembodied like scream filling the air.
"Nii-sama~..." Gravelly, and more unlike Mokuba than ever before as what was once his caring little brother growled and started to twist around, moving to stand from the floor. It lunged.
Kaiba in that one moment, finally got enough sense in him to move, darting through the automatic doors, hitting the emergency button as soon as he got out. The doors snapped shut behind him, but it wasn't enough to dull the thuds of the two creatures pounding on the door. He had no time to grieve, or even think, for a piece of the VR machine flew through the glass window near him, both creatures scrambling to get over to their victim.
He had no choice but to run.
This was, ironically, exactly like those movies Mokuba liked to watch so much. Zombie movies. Mokuba had probably seen every single one that was made, and Kaiba had been talked into watching at least half. How could Mokuba even get infected by something? Did that creature create some sort of infection when it was being formed? He couldn't get distracted by those thoughts though, the two right on his heels as he slid down the various hallways until he reached his room, slamming the two double oak doors shut and locking them. It wouldn't buy him much time, but just enough...maybe.
Crack.
Four shoves and the wood was starting to give as Kaiba calmly did the combination to the safe that was stowed away in his closet.
Craaaack.
Eight shoves, and Kaiba had the gun loaded and cocked.
Crack- Bam! Pow!
Thirteen shoves and the two creatures had gotten in, one shot being fired.
"Niiiii-sammma!"
Hesitance, then another 'kapow' lingered in the air as a dull thud came soon after. One single shot to the head ceased the creature that had once been his brother from ever moving again.
Kaiba still wasn't sure what happened to the other and original creature. As soon as that final gunshot was given, it turned and sped around, moving surprisingly fast for such a poorly made thing, leaving Kaiba alone with his brother.
"Mokuba..." I did it for you. It was just a shame the boy would never know that, or have to live through the hell that was slowly falling all around him as another gunshot faded out into the night.
─ ─ ─ ─ ─ ─ ─ ─ ─
Weeks later and Kaiba was standing on the rooftop of his old school, leaning against the fence as he checked through his supplies. Height, he had found out, seemed to be the one thing keeping humans from being turned into mindless hungry mutant creatures. Who would have thought such an innocent thing would turn into this?
"No....no...help me! Help!"
Screams fell deaf on the former CEO who absentmindedly cocked his pistol, sliding it and its twin into their respected holders under his trenchcoat. Despite the fact that having such a long coat in this time and place was a certain death hazard, Seto didn't bother to get rid of it. He could handle whatever came at him. Killing these diseased things and their creator was the only thing keeping Seto going nowadays.
One more look over his provisions and Kaiba shouldered his bag, one hand resting above the gun on his hip, finger drumming gently against the smooth metal. "Damn things," Kaiba cursed under his breath, moving on down the stairs and through the school without catching so much as a twitch of movement. The creatures were getting smarter with their new help.
As if rabid, flesh hungry humans weren't enough as it was, right?
It seemed whatever had got into his system had also created a brother virus which had tapped into his hologram systems, bringing duel monsters back into the living. Some of the creatures weren't that bad. He had encountered two Kuribohs that had skittered away at the sight of him, leaving him to believe that only certain ones craved to kill. That damned Witty Phantom was bouncing around as well, for Kaiba had seen a few glimpses of him here and there.
There were some things that Kaiba still didn't understand, but he kept his eyes and ears open while the people ran around screaming, crying. While the buildings of the city they all loved burned and collapsed all around them. Didn't they know by now not to do that? Obviously not. Kaiba had even seen a few groups try to move at night.
An honorable effort.
Shame they died before even crossing the street.
Night meant the bigger ones came out to play. Ones with dark properties. Kaiba could have sworn he saw the Dark Magician once or twice. It also meant he needed to find a safe place to crash for the hours before sunrise. Crashing, meaning he would just sit against a wall and fade in and out of a light sleep. Exhaustion was common for him as a CEO, but now it just seemed to hit him harder than normal. He supposed fighting for ones life did that sort of thing. Not that he wouldn't know. He had his share of people that hated him with all their might, and had tried to kill him on several occasions.
This though... This was something the CEO had never experienced. It was also something he could honestly say he could have lived without.

It all happened so fast, no one really knew hat hit them before it was too late. The… epidemic -- if that’s what you wanted to call it -- had taken over the city in a matter of days. With all the Duel Monsters wandering around, you couldn’t really blame people for pointing speculations towards Kaiba Corporation. In the beginning, they marveled at how real they looked; they breathed, moved, looked and even smelled real. It was phenomenal. Kaiba was paving the way for future technology. The company was light years ahead of it’s time. And then people were attacked. The Duel Monsters turned violent. People were being killed on their way to work, school, the movie theatre, and their homes. The town went crazy, accusing Kaiba Corporation of terrorist acts. They turned in a matter of days; their hero turning into a mass-murderer. The strange thing was, Kaiba Corp. said nothing. No press conference, no media statement. Nothing. That only seemed to fuel peoples anger. A weeks in, with no word from Kaiba Corp, and no explanation from the government… then things started getting worse. The few cases of people who had survived a monster attack started acting strange. Most doctors signed it off as trauma build up. By the time people knew what was happening, it was too late. Another week later, and the dead started rising. It wasn’t until then that people finally understood what was going on. After that, all that really mattered was surviving. Something Jounouchi was struggling with just like everyone else who hadn’t been picked off yet. That sounded harsh, but the truth hurt sometime. It was something no one in the world had encountered before, and in all fairness, no one knew exactly what measures to take. The people still alive had learned what not to do by those who where on longer… human, or if they were lucky, dead. You didn’t go out at night, you didn’t make loud noises, and you always double checked the area. Though the question was if you should travel in groups or not. Personally, Jounouchi thought it safer to travel in groups. You had someone to watch your back. Not to mention, Jou would always be there for his friends. Finding out they were all still alive was a huge weight off his shoulders. They had all been through a lot with one another. Saving the world multiple times, having their souls taken, being hunted down by an ancient psychopath killer… well there had been a few of those… what was a few angry flesh-hungry Duel Monsters along with their zombie minions? He’d played his fair share of zombie games. There wasn’t much too it. Don’t get bitten or killed. How hard could that be? Harder than one would think, it turned out. Before he ran into Honda and Yuugi, Katsuya was all for it. Excited even. If he could handle himself in a videogame, why couldn’t he do it in real life? The only problem with real life, was he had no access to guns, and even if he did have a gun he had the problem of not knowing how to use it. After that realization, things weren’t so fun anymore. But, he was Jounouchi Katsuya, and had one of the best runs of lucky anyone could think of. He hadn’t once had a bad run in with trouble. Instead, he ended up finding his friends. After that, while it still wasn’t fun, he at least had some hope that they’d make it through things. He’d have a few close run ins when looking for food and supplies for everyone, but they always managed to sneak past without too much trouble. They had come up with a good system. Travel in pairs, and they rotated who went out with what. It wasn’t like they needed much other than food. But every now and then they needed soap, or other luxuries. Especially with Anzu around. Who would have guessed how much stuff a girl needed: soap, mascara, foundation, eye lash curler, lip stick… Who knew a girl had to look gorgeous for flesh eating creatures. Then again, Anzu was pretty superficial like that. After almost getting their heads cut off by a Celtic Warrior, they decided if Anzu wanted more than food, she could get it herself. If it benefited the group, then the next scavenger group did what they could to get it. If it was a personal item, then you were on your own. It was only fair. That wasn’t why they were out now though. If only. Jou would have loved to be out looking for food. Unfortunately, they were looking for a new location to call home. The Game Shop wasn’t safe anymore. Not with a Spear Dragon burrowing next door. And so, Jounouchi now found himself staring up at the roofs of the city buildings. The alley way was clear, but that didn’t mean something couldn’t drop down at them. “ ”Oi, Honda. Man where are we even going?” He wasn’t sure why he asked. It was obvious Honda didn’t have a clue. But that didn’t really stop him from asking. The silence was starting to get to him. “ How would I know? Somewhere without Duel Monsters trying to kill us.” They turned a corner and wandered down the alley a bit more before they could see the road. “ Because that’s possible to do.” The brunet rolled his eyes, “ Ya know what I mean! Don‘t go being such a smart a**.” Jou had every intention of smart-assing right back, but having a shot gun shoved in his face was a good silencer. “You! You monsters!” Amber eyes blinked at the barrel aimed at him. “You think you can get me huh? You can’t get me! I won’t let you scrawny little animals kill me without a fight!” “[color-forestgreen]Ma’am?” It wasn’t everyday he was being threatened by a normal human being. It seemed the stress had finally-- “ Ma’am, you’re bleeding…” Her right arm was entirely red. Had she been shot? It would explain why she was acting crazy…. Realization dawned a bit too late. “ s**t.” She’d been bitten. The lady continued to babble on, rifle waving but still aimed at the slowly retreating blonde. Maybe if he kept backing up slowly, she wouldn’t shoot. Honda seemed to have the same idea. That didn’t seem to soften the crazy look in her off blue eyes. The growl that echoed down the street didn’t seem to help her nerves. “Stop moving!” She shrieked, and the two boys went still. It wasn’t until a Man Eater Bug came out of the ally that she turned her attention away from them. A shot ran out and the two boys shot down the road. A hungry bug, and a crazy lady with a shot gun didn’t sound like a safe place to be. With all the noises going on, it was sure to attract bigger Monsters. Another shot rang out, and for a split second Katsuya saw white. With a hiss, he caught his footing. "No....no...help me! Help!" Jou stopped, turned around in time to see the bug devouring his food. “ Jou! Come on!” “ We can’t just leave her…” In the back of his mind he realized it was too late, the blood splattered over the pavement and the bug’s mouth was proof of that. Not to mention if she had been bitten, it only would have been a matter of time. The blond felt a hand on his shoulder, “ Jou, we gotta move!” Honda pulled the blond away from the eating bug as another bellow was let out. The two made it down the road, and shot into a building. “ Christ, Jou! What were you thinking, stopping back there? Are you crazy?” Katsuya shook his head, “ I just thought maybe we could help her….” He gripped the metal pole he’d been carrying with one hand, the other resting on his side. “ She was just watching out for herself….” Jou blinked, looking around their surroundings. “ When did we get to the school?” The growling outside the building had the two wandering around the school. “ Seems safe enough.” Honda shrugged, putting his stolen police baton on the holder on his back. “ Who would have thought I’d be so happy to see this place.” he shook his head, opening the cafeteria door. “ Damn. Can you imagine living here?” The brunet shook his head, laughing about the irony of it being the last safe place on earth. “ Hay! You alright?” Jou blinked, before looking down at his side. “ Just nicked me. I’ll be fine.” He smiled at his friend, nodding as the brunet went on and on about something else he found ironic. It wasn’t until the crash and the growl that the amber eyed teen turned around. “ Honda!!!!” More blood. It seemed to spew from his friends neck like the fountain in the middle of Domino Park. The blond stood frozen, eyes locked with the green wolf and it’s teeth which were firmly locked in his struggling friends neck. What seemed like years past before Honda’s thrashing stopped. It was only then that Jounouchi’s flight instinct kicked in. Before he knew it, he was down the hall and dashing up a flight of stairs. He still gripped his unused metal pole with his hands, though what good it would do him, he didn’t know. The blond let out a yelp as he hit the ground, sliding across the floor having tripped over the last stair. He barely had time to roll to his back before White Fang leapt on top of him. It’s razor, and blood covered teeth snapping at him as it tried to get around the pole Jou was desperately clinging to, though with the weight of the wolf, he wasn’t sure how much longer he could hold up. His arms were already tied, and his size was already on fire long before the wolfs paws dug into it. He finally got the green furred animal off him long enough to stand up. That thing had killed Honda! The reality of which he didn’t think had set in all the way yet. “ Oh Jounouchi. You should have kept running.” The words didn’t have time to process before Katsuya felt himself being hurled into the lockers opposite the stairs. “ Tisk tisk tisk. You think you would have learned by now.” Honey colored eyes stared in horror at the hunched over and sneering face of his former friend. “ Honda…” He had to remember that wasn’t his friend. That couldn’t be. His friend never had a twisted up face, and empty colored eyes. It couldn’t be… and yet, there he stood, blood dripping from the missing part of his neck. He didn’t think the wound on his side was that bad, but with all the running and the weight of the wolf on top of him, maybe he’d lost a little too much blood. He’d seen Honda’s throat ripped out right before his eyes. “ Get up, Jounouchi. Let’s have a little fun.“ Katsuya had barely gotten to his feet, before the forgotten wolf made another jump at him. xx xx xx xx ۞ ۞ ۞ ۞ ۞ ۞ ۞ ۞ ۞ ۞ ۞ ۞ ۞ ۞ ۞ ۞ ۞ ۞ ۞x xx xx

▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄ What the hell was that?
Such a wonderful thought, and yet he had no idea. Noises. Growling. Voices. Kaiba didn’t freeze; no, it was more of a pause, followed by a quick turn on the heel, sapphire eyes gazing about, breath held while he tried to pinpoint which way it was coming from. It was…familiar, and that wasn’t a word Kaiba had the ability to use often. Hell, the only people he had been ‘acquainted’ with was Yuugi and the other geek squad members, and even then he didn’t say much other than insulting the mutt.
With things being hectic, and the project that he had been working on that caused this mess, he hadn’t even made contact with that group in two years. Mokuba had, countless times, and even gave him updates that he would repeatedly say he didn’t want. What use was that to him? …As far as everyone knew now, their beloved CEO of Kaiba Corp was dead somewhere in a gutter. It would take more than duel monsters and reanimated dead to kill Kaiba Seto, especially when he was determined to do something. Stupid creatures wouldn’t know what the hell hit them.
Boots moved silently along the tiled floor as he crept down the hallways, gun out and cocked by his side. Thankfully the lights were still working halfway, so it was easier to see. What he did see had him rolling his eyes and grabbing his second gun. In two years, Kaiba could say that the mutt didn’t seem to have changed much. He also would admit it wasn’t the fact he knew who the blond was that caused him to actually ‘help’. Such a reason would be pointless.
A simple yet loud whistle had the White Fang turning from Jounouchi and towards Kaiba instead. Two galloping strides later and the wolf pounced onto the unmoving Kaiba, only to be kicked in the head a second later, a loud howl and a sickening crack echoing soon after.
Kaiba had simply gained a bloodlust.
“Stupid mongrel.”
And he wasn’t talking about the wolf.
Now he just had the brunet to worry with, and the fact that White Fang’s were pack creatures. That howl would have more there soon, and if he wanted to get out of there alive, he needed to get a move on. He had every intention of turning and leaving, guns held by his sides as he looked at the pathetic and unbalanced blond, then towards the brunet that was mocking him and throwing the mutt against the locker.
An amusing sight actually, but it didn’t take long for Kaiba to notice the gaping hole in the brunet’s neck. The mutt’s friend killed by a mutt. How ironic, and yet he felt no real sympathy for what he was about to do. Not that he every expected to in the first place.
One clean shot to the head was all it took to finished the obnoxious creature off. It’s hands went limp, dropping Jou from it’s clutches, bits of brain matter and blood sprayed across the lockers as it slumped to the ground with a ‘thud’. Satisfied with his work, he took two steps closer, gazed down at the dead male, then nudged him with his shoe. If it hadn’t been for the fact that he was Kaiba Seto, and carrying two fully loaded pistols, then the act would have seemed almost innocent. That facade was erased the moment he shot the unmoving male again as a ’just in case’.
It was a valued rule in every Zombie movie that actually made sense and was useful. ’Double Tapping’. The art of shoot something twice in the head to make sure it wouldn’t be able to move again. A ’double check’ of sorts. Better to make sure it was dead than to shoot it once and have it come back to only kill you.
“One less moron to worry about,” he thought, rolling his eyes once again, looking at and observing Jounouchi. Hand reaching out, he snatched the blond up, not even bothering to say anything as he checked the moron over for any sign of biting or infection. Seemed even the moron was able to do something right.
“If you’re going to mourn, then do it fast and get over it. You'll only get killed if you dwell too long,” Kaiba stated flatly, his level gaze aimed down at the blond. Something about the rigid CEO just screamed 'back off or the gun will be the last thing you see'. After the accident, Kaiba hadn't even really mourned. He bottled all that anger, sadness, guilt- every emotion that a normal human should experience in such a time, and hid it deep within his own soul to where he couldn't even find it anymore. In the end, it made his soul even darker, and his heart even colder.
Finger clicking the safety on one of the guns, Kaiba shoved it into the blond's hands. "This, is a gun. Learn to use it, because you won't get far with the way you're going about things." Though that was always an option if one ran out of bullets. So far that hadn't happened. Surprisingly, most people didn't think of taking up arms in this sort of crisis. He was positive that half the people in the city, if not more, didn't know about the gun and ammo shops around there. Or they were too panicked to even think of it.
Setting his gun on the holder by his leg, the once CEO turned, the sound of his steps echoing off the abandoned walls. He couldn't, and wouldn't, wait for the mutt to get a hold of himself. Finding a place to stay out of sight was something that needed to be done while he could still see. "Get moving, mutt. Their pack will be here soon, and I don't think they except strays."

Jounouchi wasn’t sure what was going on. One minute his friend was there with him, laughing and making fun of him. One minute they were running for their lives the next they were safe in the school. One minute his friend was alive, the next there was blood gushing from his neck. One minute he was running from a dog, the next he was being thrown into lockers, his dead best friend laughing at him. Then, suddenly the dog was gone, and his friend had a grip around his throat. Then, Honda was dead. There was a gun shot. And Honda was bleeding on the floor again. And Jou was on the floor coughing, and gasping for breath. There was a voice that he oddly recognized, and someone was helping him to stand up. Chocolate eyes blinked, once… twice… three times….. “ K-Kaiba?” Was he surprised? Yes! Everyone thought the CEO of Kaiba Corporation had died. Yet there the brunet stood, tall and arrogant as ever. Somewhere in his mind, Jounouchi couldn’t help but feel a bit relieved that the brunet was alive and well… though it didn’t last long as the taller male continued to talk. He stood there stumped as he felt himself being checked over. Kaiba was alive? So did Kaiba Corperation have an answer to… well to this? He turned and looked down and the bloodied body of his deceased friend. Blood was gushing from the holes in Honda’s head, and the missing chunk out of his neck. Jou felt his stomach turn at the site of the mangled body. Honda was gone…. Dead. He was killed, turned into a zombie, then killed again. Katsuya blinked again, and looked down at the cold heavy metal object that had been placed in his hands. ‘ A gun?’ His brow furrowed in confusion. What was this for? He didn’t know how to work a gun? Why would he need to? His metal pole had worked fine for him. Not to mention he didn’t want to kill anything, even if they were flesh craving monsters…. Chocolate brown eyes couldn’t help but shift back down to his dead friend. He was gone… for good…. Honda wasn’t coming back; Not now, not ever. And it was his fault. If only he had been paying more attention to what was going on instead of lingering on that old woman –who shot him, he might add. He shouldn’t have been so concerned for a lady who had been bitten, and who had shot him. He should have been paying closer attention to Honda and himself! This world was a place where you had to fight for survival. Boots clicking against the ground had the blond looking up at Kaiba’s retreating form. Oh no he didn’t! Kaiba wasn’t getting away from him that easily! “ Hey--” Their pack would be there soon? Jou tilted his head in confusion, before a distant howl echoed into the school….. ‘ Wait a minute… Stray!?!?!!’ He felt a familiar anger boil inside him, before he stormed after the brunet, ignoring the pain in his side. “ I see the only thing that’s changed is ya’ve becoming a bigger p***k than ya used ta be!” Yes, he was getting angry now, and storming after the brunet wasn’t helping his frustration. Why was he having such trouble catching up? And… when did the room start to spin? “ .... Who… Who are you to tell me how to live my life? It’s gotten me this far, hasn’t…… hasn’t it….” He was panting, and he couldn’t understand why. He was physically fit. A simple power walk should have been nothing…. But, he found himself reaching out with his arm, and holding onto the wall. He was hunched over, staring down at his shoes and wondering why they were blurry. Then he felt gravity. He felt it pushing him down, and he could feel the floor rushing up on him. The wound in his side was screaming at him. Stupid old lady with her shot gun…. He was trying to push himself up. He was trying to move, but it didn’t seem like his limbs wanted to cooperate, his entire body didn’t seem to want to work for that matter. Jounouchi let out a soft groan from the pain in his side. His mind clinging to his consciousness desperately. xx xx xx xx ۞ ۞ ۞ ۞ ۞ ۞ ۞ ۞ ۞ ۞ ۞ ۞ ۞ ۞ ۞ ۞ ۞ ۞ ۞x xx xx

▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄
Kaiba couldn't say he was all that surprised that the mutt's first instinct would be to pick a fight with him; the person who had just saved his sorry flea bitten a**. It wasn't his problem, or fault that the mutt's friend -- whatever his name was, Kaiba had long since forgotten -- had become such a way. That in itself was actually false, but the point where there within all the tangled mess that was this problem. "And you've merely become louder. I thought someone would have trained you to stop yapping by now." And to make things even worse, there was now a stray dog following after him. Kaiba didn't even bother to spare a sigh at such a thing, just keeping his pace steady and in long strides as he checked his gun. He had no doubt that he would run into something else; whether it would be the rest of that pack, or infected, he didn't know, and didn't care. Dealing with the mutt was putting him behind though, and he was going to have to act fast to find some place safe to stay at this rate.
Being outside was not something he would be chancing because of this mutt.
But the idiot just had to keep on didn't he? Kaiba was becoming sorry that he had even saved the idiotic blond from his little... friend, or whatever that one was. Kaiba couldn't even remember the brown-haired one's name, so he doubt it was of much importance. But when the insult trailed off, Kaiba knew something wasn't quite right, and it was backed up with the thud he heard only seconds later. Pausing his steps, Kaiba turned, cold eyes staring at the fallen blond with an unreadable expression as another loud howl echoed through the school. They were no doubt getting closer. Leaving the mutt there would mean that there was a high chance the blond would be no more, and Kaiba was fine with that. There was only one thing that made him move forward to assist the mutt. Only one. He knew from Mokuba's chatting that the blond had helped him out more than once, and Kaiba didn't like feeling that he owed people things... even if that person was the mongrel. After all, it wasn't in his nature to say thank you, so saving his a** once again would put him back in equal terms.
At least, that's the mindset Kaiba had.
"Yes, it's gotten you curled up on the floor waiting to be put down." True enough. Kaiba was less than gentle as he nudged the mutt onto his back, eyes moving to where the blond was holding. Kaiba might have felt -- in some way, though honestly the feeling was so miniscule that it was only honoring what his brother would have wanted that made him do this -- obligated to go forth and help this idiot, but he wouldn't be doing himself any good if he helped someone who was infected survive. Kaiba had made a promise to himself that he would destroy whatever became infected without a second thought. Kids. Women. It didn't matter to the CEO. He would clear these things out one by one until he got to the main one, and then he would finish off his revenge.
What happened after that... well Kaiba wasn't so sure for once.
Bullet, Kaiba noted, eyes barely able to make out the wound entrance with the dim lighting in the hall. Well, it looked like the mutt had escaped being put down by one of Kaiba's bullets, if only for the moment. Retrieving the gun that he had given to the blond, Kaiba stowed it away into the holder on his thigh, unceremoniously picking the blond up with little difficulty. He didn't try to make it easier on him, because making Jounouchi comfortable was not the first priority in something like this.
Actually, it wasn't first in mind ever.
As far as he could tell by the lack of complaining, Jounouchi wasn't exactly with him at that moment. That was probably for the best. Less noise Kaiba would have to deal with. But who seriously went around getting in the way of a gun? Then again, those who probably did have guns most likely had no idea how to truly use them. What a wonderful thought. Infected, bugged out duel monsters, and scared untrained civilians with guns. This truly was a hell, wasn't it?
He didn't walk far. With the way Jounouchi was losing blood, such a thing would have been pointless. Not to mention he was almost certain those damn mutts that were on their way could smell that blood. So this made things worse. Leave it to the mongrel to screw s**t up more than it already was. In the end, Kaiba had managed to find a small classroom that had few windows, and a working lock on the door. That lock wasn't exactly going to be worth much, but it would give him several seconds if need be, and that was something.
Dropping the mutt in the corner farthest from the door, Kaiba left him alone as he took the next few moments to barricade the door with anything heavy and sturdy. The teachers desk was the first thing, followed by a bookshelf and several other student desks. Next on the list was closing the blinds and making sure the least amount of light would be visible from the outside. More preparations would have been done, but given his limited time frame, and the face he had the problem of Jounouchi bleeding out on him, every second counted. For the record, though, Kaiba was starting to believe this truly was more trouble than it was worth.
All in all, the thought that Jounouchi might actually die then and there never crossed Kaiba's mind. Perhaps in some way that was a compliment -- or an insult, if one took it as he just didn't care -- but Kaiba honestly thought that the idiot would find some way to pull through, even if it was to snap at him some more. With their past, he wouldn't have found it strange. "Useless..." Kaiba muttered under his breath as he knelt down next to the blond, dropping the bag he carried with him to the floor. He worked as quickly as he could, using what day light was still left to do what needed to be done. He didn't want to chance using artificial light. Once he had Jounouchi laid out on the floor in front of him, he grabbed the first aid kid he carried along, digging through its contents, eyes darting from one thing to the next with skilled ease. Amazing how calm one could be in a situation like this. Kaiba had learned how to do things himself though. He trusted few, and when he had been younger, he had been taught how to patch himself up if something happened to him. Though that had been taught as a last resort type thing, in case he was taken and put in bad shape. Who knew it would be useful in such a thing like this.
There wasn't really much Kaiba could do in the sterilizing area. As much blood was leaving, it would have been useless to try such a thing. Long cold fingers prodded along the blond's side, finding the bullet with a sigh. Wonderful. Digging out a pair of tweezers, he pressed his hand against the blond's side to make sure he didn't move, slowly but surely finding the edge of the bullet. It wasn't the quickest procedure in existence, because this was the first time he had ever had to pull out a bullet, but he figured he was doing the least amount of damage that could be done from getting a bullet out of someone. By the time the metal casing hit the floor, Kaiba's hands were completely red with the blond's blood, and his pants weren't exactly clean of it either. Just kept piling up, didn't it? Wouldn't be the first person whose blood had gotten on his hands, and it wouldn't be the last.
The rest of his task went a lot more smoothly, Kaiba sewing the wound up as tightly and best as he could with what he could see. It was only then that he used the alcohol to clean the blood away before wrapping gauze tightly around the blond's midsection to make sure it was thoroughly protected. Screw him being even with the mutt. The mongrel owed him for doing this s**t. "Of all things," Kaiba muttered, wiping his hands off the best he could onto his pants, tossing the supplies back into the kit before taking a long nice moment to just lean back against the wall, pistol finding his way into his hands as he heard some sniffing coming from the other side of the door.
Now came the waiting game to see if those mutts outside the door would back down, and to see if the one inside with him would pull through. To be truthful, this was surely not a game Kaiba was looking forward to dealing with.

The world was foggy; it kept going in and out. He kept falling between hazes of blackness. Jounouchi wasn’t sure what was a dream and what was real anymore. One minute he was laying on the ground the far off feeling of his warm blood pooling around his side, and the next he could feel himself slung over something. Reality was slipping through his fingers; the only thing he was constantly aware of was the shooting pain in his side. That dull throb was constant, even in the darkness that over took him he could feel the pain. He was vaguely aware of his head knocking against something as his body was set somewhere. Jou let out a soft groan, eyelashes flickering against his cheek as chocolate eyes tried to open. Blurs. Everything melded together in a mesh of unforced color. Something moved; a blur moving among all the other blurs. Jou felt the need to say something, what, he didn’t know. Though the question, “What happened?” did enter his mind. And then the blackness swallowed him up again. That blackness that swallowed him up; where his body floated effortlessly despite the continuous pain in his side. It felt like that strange limbo; where his mind was shut off yet he still was aware, in an odd sense of the word. It was kind of like he was floating within himself, yet not himself. He wasn’t a philosopher, he didn’t understand it. In his current state, he didn’t have any desire to know. Then the pain was there. It was shooting through his body; amplified past the point it had been when it first happened. It felt like he was being sucked into something, before he was bad in his body; back into the world of blurs and stabs of pain. Katsuya let out a pained cry, trying to sit up and crawl away from the pain coming from his side, though the pressure on his side kept him from moving much. The blond’s hands clenched into the fabric of an arm, his face twisted up into pain as he felt the probing in his side. There was blood, he could see it and he could smell it. He could see how it oozed out of the hole in the side of his abdomen as the bullet was pulled out of him. The world spun around him, and he felt his grasp on his consciousness slipping again. Jou let out a noise of protest, desperately trying to stay awake. After the mutation, you couldn’t afford to black out without knowing your surroundings; without having people you knew to sharing a watch schedule. But it was too late. He could feel his heavy eyelids closing, and the weight of his limbs increasing as he slipped back into darkness. And he was out like a light. There was no pain. There was nothing. Jou didn’t feel the pain in his side, or the small sting of having the whole sewn up or the alcohol being used to clean his skin. He was just out. The lithe blond wasn’t sure how long he had been out, but eventually the feeling in his limbs started coming back to him, and the dull throb in his side was back. That damn old lady and her shot gun. All Jou had ever done was try and help, and what did he get in return? A bullet lodged in his side. See if he ever tried to help little old ladies ever again. Parents told their kids to help old people cross the street, or carry their groceries. Well what parents don’t say, is that some of those old people have bites from infected duel monsters and that they’ll shoot you in a heartbeat after they’ve lost their minds. Yeah, definitely not helping old ladies again. Jounouchi let out a groan, his eyelids cracking open with a slight wince. Amber eyes blinked, trying to clear the blurs from his vision. Everything was dark, and it was difficult to make out anything in the room from what little light was filtering into the room. Jou’s hand drifted to his side, lightly running over the bandage. The wound still hurt, but it wasn’t as bad as it had been. He’d been patched up, but how – Kaiba! He’d been fighting with the useless p***k when…. But why did…. He moved to sit up, trying to get a better view of the room which was still a bit too dark for his liking. Katsuya let out a hiss, his hand coming to his side as he let himself relax back onto the floor. Okay, so sitting up hurt like hell. Anyway, the floor was comfortable enough… kind of. And then he heard the sniffing behind the door, and scratches of claws against the door. Despite the throb of protest from his side, Jounouchi still pushed himself back away from the door. The blond couldn’t help the slight jump when his head hit something soft. He jerked his head back, looking up to make out the form of another person. “ Gees. s**t.” Jou’s body relaxed back onto the floor, his hand grabbing his side which wasn’t too happy at him for sliding across the floor and then jumping out of his skin. Leave it to Kaiba to scare the s**t out of him by just sitting there. He didn’t know how long he was out, and he didn’t know what exactly had happened – or why Kaiba had even bothered to bandage him up – but that didn’t mean he wasn’t curious. “ What the hell happened?” Katsuya grinded his teeth, biting back the painful yelp that wanted to leave his lips as he forced himself to sit up. The blond pivoted so his back was able to lean heavily against the wall, his hand holding his patched up side. xx xx xx xx ۞ ۞ ۞ ۞ ۞ ۞ ۞ ۞ ۞ ۞ ۞ ۞ ۞ ۞ ۞ ۞ ۞ ۞ ۞x xx xx

▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄
It had been several hours at least since he had finished fixing the mutt up, and in that time Seto had dozed off twice, and had been ready five different times to blow one of those creatures' heads off the moment they tried to get through that door. Thankfully, it hadn't come to that yet. The CEO's muscles were becoming increasingly sore from the amount of tensing he had been doing these few hours. Those damn things weren't going away, and it made Kaiba concerned. Not for the fact that they weren't safe for the moment, but because he didn't know how long that would last... or how many would have gathered by morning's light.
Had it been any other time, and his own life had not been at risk, he would have found the fact that the mutt was scared of other mutts to be rather amusing, if not borderline hilarious. However he felt nothing but annoyance that Jounouchi couldn't mask his surprise and fear well enough to keep quiet, especially when he was bumped into and the louder sounds were made. Cobalt eyes narrowed in the lack of light, glaring at the form of the blond as though he had personally offended him by that mere touch. What was wrong with the mutt? Didn't he realize he needed to shut up? Such a yappy dog. He would have thought that would have been trained out of him by now. And to think he could have assisted in putting the mutt down.
Without the slightest inkling of hesitation, a pale hand was pressed -- or more like smacked -- against the blond's mouth firmly in hopes of silencing him from speaking further. For several long seconds Kaiba sat there, hand cupped over the blond's mouth and eyes glued to the blocked door. It was like in one of those spy movies where they would wait to ambush the bad guys while crouching, and there would always be the rookie who didn't know what they were doing and had to be shut up. An amusing sight, but Kaiba's features displayed nothing but cold ruthlessness in the slight light that came through the shades. The scratching had become stronger, and Kaiba carefully cocked his gun the best he could with one hand, not trusting the mutt in there with him to not speak if he took his hand away. He could teach the mutt how to stay silent like a decent dog later, right now there were bigger things that needed attention.
For three painstakingly long minutes the scratching and growling continued; the sounds of air being exhaled against the foot of the door echoing far too loudly in Kaiba's ears. And like the many times before, after a rough ram at the door, the pack seemed to go back to wandering-- or so it seemed. This certainly wasn't the first time this had happened. That pack knew something was in here; what it was, he doubted they could tell right off the bat, but that just proved that he was going to have to do something, or hope that their attention would be shoved off onto something else, or someone, rather. With the threat gone, though, Kaiba saw no reason to keep his hand anywhere near the mutt, even if it was doing a rather good job of giving him some sort of peace in this god forsaken hell he had created. "You should learn to quiet that insistent barking of yours, mutt, and learn to use your ears instead," Kaiba stated lowly, removing his hand and wiping it like he had done hours earlier to remove Jounouchi's blood. "Otherwise I will begin regretting my decision on keeping you alive." Joking had never been something that Kaiba had been good at. Because of this, it was painfully obvious that he was not joking in the slightest. Kaiba regretting keeping the blond alive would mean that he would leave the blond alone to defend for himself. It wasn't like Jounouchi was of any real use to him now anyway.
There was only so much a wounded person could do.
"I thought it would be rather obvious as to what happened. You were shot. And while you insisted on following me around like the pathetic dog you are, doing that excessive yapping of yours, you, for lack of a better word, fainted." That was the short version it seemed, but Kaiba was in no mood to delve into luscious detail. It was late, and the day had not been one he had enjoyed. Of course, Kaiba had not enjoyed a day since this all began. Still, the point was there, and Kaiba's patience level was at a all critical low at that very moment. "To make things simple for that one track mind of yours; you're patched up as well as one could hope for in a situation like this. It's up to your body to pull through for the rest of it. Though I do wonder why of all things, you would be stupid enough to move in front of a loaded gun. Stupidity has limits, mutt, though you've seemed to surpass those long before now." Kaiba hadn't bothered to tell the mutt that he had managed to stop the bleeding before he lost too much. The real problem was infection; he hadn't exactly had a completely sterilize working place to preform something like this. Not that it was his fault. The only reason he was saving the blond's a** was because of Mokuba. Only that. Had his brother been alive in this situation, Kaiba knew full and well that the boy would have shown concern for the blond that -- for some god forsaken reason -- he had considered a friend. Kaiba never understood the connection his brother held with these people.
At the same time, he condoned it-- if only to make Mokuba happy. Even if Kaiba hated it himself.
A long heavy sigh left the CEO as he altered his position, bringing he left knee up towards his chest while his left arm dangled over it, the gun hanging loosely in the clutch of his pale fingers. He wasn't the least bit concerned about shooting Jou, or anything else for that matter. The safety was on anyway. So it didn't matter. Moments later his forehead met the crook of his arm, shoulders still as tense and squared off as they had ever been. Even in what would be deemed a somewhat comforting position, the young CEO was not asleep. Which was rather apparent seeing as the young man would shift ever so often and raise his head up enough to glance towards the door or windows before resuming the position once again. He couldn't leave his life in the protection of this flea bitten mongrel, that much was quite clear. Not that it was ever an option to begin with. A Kaiba didn't put trust in others; nothing would get done that way. If he wanted to survive through this and kill that creature, he was going to have to do it his way. Humanity be damned, Kaiba had long since stopped caring about what he would do to the humans that got in his way.
