So, now that my computer will actually start up successfully...
Anyone heard of a virus called antivirus soft? I have no idea where I got it, but I think it was lurking on my computer for a while before I started getting nag screens. It stumped avg, and I had to manually remove a .exe file that looked suspicious and that taskmanager led me to believe was associated with the nag screen. Two more antivirus programs only found one infection between them, something disturbingly titled 'disable security center' in the registry. But trojans keep popping up in avg and the computer is still acting funny, particularly the network connection and firewall... I think there's a trojan downloader somewhere still, at the very least.
I hate computers. [/bitchfest]

Ugh. Have not encountered that yet. I have NoScript in addition to AVG, and it seems to do pretty well.

Noscript looks interesting. *downloads*
Something keeps causing the network connection to crap out, and then the firewall is off when it comes back on. That is not normal for this computer!
Apparently I made the noob mistake of using microsoft's default firewall, which I guess isn't that great. Somehow I think that I need a two-way firewall at this point, and the only free one I can find has a lot of negative reviews on cnet for slowing down the computer. But it's very well reputed overall, so what the heck.
