Whenever I give and offering, I usually just place it on my altar (or any powerful natural place, really) and say a little prayer.
After the offering that I gave has been, well, offered, I either burn it, bury it, or throw it into a body of water. What is the best option depends upon where you live.... Obviously, if you don't live anywhere near water you can't throw your offering into a lake or anything, and living in a city can make it tricky to burn or bury something. In the case of living in a city, sometimes if what I've offered is edible, I will simply live it in a park for the animals and elements to consume it.
Of course, the idea of leaving food around brings me to the next point.... You must always be aware of what you are offering, and how you are offering it. If I were to offer a chocolate bar to the fair folk, I wouldn't just leave it lying in a busy city park where someone's dog or any other poor animal could eat it and get sick. If, however, what I offered was a homemade, organic oatmeal cookie, I'd doubt a squirrel would get sick off of that, and would probably have no qualms about leaving that around. Similarly, if you were planning to burn your offering, you should make sure that it's fumes would not be toxic in any way. In fact, my own standard is that anything I offer is safe for the environment, since that's where it's going to end up.
Ok, I think that's enough of a lecture for now. I hope it helped. smile
