Check the Learning Japanese section of this guild. The first things I would work on are learning the characters- hiragana, katakana, and then starting on simple kanji. There are threads with links to sites that will help you learn how to write and pronounce the characters.
From there, there are also sites listed that will help with basic grammar. It can seem intimidating but if you study a little every single day it will slowly become more familiar to you.
If you get a chance to attend a class, I highly recommend it. Personal study can be very time consuming and move slowly. A college or high school course may be more difficult, but you'll learn more quickly.

I do agree that learning that characters are most important. Also a great to learn is to make flashcards with basic greeting and place around your room and bathroom. Use romanization (english letters) first, and then when you feel comfortable use the hiragana. So for self study it is gradual and less daunting. If you would like a list of good words, many guild members would be happy to assist you with some words. I think 20 is a good start.

Nice suggestions. For the sake of not making an extra thread to ask, I'll follow this thread, too. This website seemed kind of helpful as well because Japanese derives from the Chinese system. http://www.cjvlang.com/Writing/writjpn.html It supposedly compares Chinese, Vietnamese and Japanese. Once again, thank you for letting nooblets like us in. xd
