Blogger Amanda Hess thinks that birth control sabotage should be considered sexual assault. Other blogs have discussed BC sabotage as a sign of abuse before, but I don't know if it's considered quite the same as sexual assualt. It should definitely be illegal, and I'm thinking that it's pretty much in the same category of rape. What do you guys think?

(And should I make an ED thread of this? I haven't made one in ages!)

Its definitely abuse. I dont know if it is sexual assault or what though. It could be because it would be using the womans reproductive system to gain control over her (ie to get her pregnant against her will).

I'm not sure if I agree with labeling it sexual assault. For legal purposes, perhaps, but if used colloquially I feel it may stretch the definition of sexual assault so as to make that which is commonly understood as sexual assault seem less grave than it is. I know this is a argument with holes in it you can see from the moon, but PR and legal shenanigans are two very different beasts, sadly.

It sure is a question that'll attract attention - I may just have to stay away from it to protect my blood pressure though.

I'm not sure if I'd class it as sexual assault, but assault of some form might work. Definitely agreeing that it should be a punishable offense. If nothing else, tampering with BC pills would be tampering with a person's prescriptions and surely that fall under something.

And another one!
The Nation | When Teen Pregnancy Is No Accident

It seems that this is something that's been getting a lot of attention lately. This article even points out that it's basically the opposite of the horror story of a girl getting pregnant to "trap" her boyfriend. I'm totally gonna make an ED thread once I have time (which should start tomorrow after my finals!). I've gotta think about this one. It's scary stuff.

I'd be curious to see some dialogue on the subject, but I can't get over the fear of how much soul-sucking "she didn't leave so she deserves it" is probably going to occur along with "she should of watched her BC more closely" and goodness knows what else.

I'm torn.

But that does remind me of something. My mother worked in a women's clinic for a number of years which helped to serve the underprivileged in our area. They had a number of Catholic hispanic patients who wanted birth control to space out their children, but they had to hide the birth control from their partner because he would throw it out or potentially retaliate against her. The norplant (arm implant) was a really popular option there as was the depo shot.

Ugh, yes. I get to the point where all I can say is "stop victim blaming" and leave it at that. Which does nothing to educate those who aren't simply trolling but genuinely believe that to be true and/or reasonable.

That's horrible. Though cynical as it may sound, it's actually preferable to the cases we have here; those Catholic ladies were well aware of the expected reaction and were able to take precaution. These teens/college aged girls, not so much.

Still though, the fact that they had to hide it from their partner rather than being able to openly and honestly discuss their desires about spacing children or even not having anymore just makes me sad.

Makes me even more glad for my partner being firmly behind the idea that this is my body we're discussing and not community property.
