Celi had decided once more to drag her young boy out of the house, taking him to another park for a nice little picnic. He didn't mind, it wasn't that big of a deal in his mind since it wasn't unbearably hot and even if it had been Celi had brought enough food to distract him, though it was a bit too much for the two to handle alone.
"Mother, why did you bring so much food? We'll never eat all that..." he said, trailing off as his dear mother continued to pull item after item out of the basket that held the delicious treats.
Celi merely smiled gently, "Well, you never know when you'll have extra guests who are hungry."

Spring was the best time of year for a trip to the park, in Kaleb's opinion. The trees were just budding with life, literally. The flowers were all in bloom, and made the park look like a field of color even when you looked away from the children playing. He held a small branch of lilacs in one hand, hoping to give it to someone. That was one habit he hadn't been broken of yet; he loved giving flowers to people he'd just met.
He saw two people picnicing, and smiled. One looked around his age. He started to make his way over to them. "Hello," he greeted. "My name's Kaleb," he added, addressing Pippin. "Want some lilacs?"

Pippin looked up, a bit surprised. Normally he blended into a crowd and didn't stick out so he wasn't particularly accustomed to being approached by strangers. As he looked up he saw the branch of lilacs, and though they weren't near his nose he could smell their sweet scent that reminded him of his mother.
With a small nod he spoke, "My name's Pippin, an' sure, I'd love some. They smell really nice, where are they from?" he asked in an attempt to start polite conversation. He had always been taught to do so, and figured this was a perfect real life application of his teachings and he listened intently for the reply of the other.

"Hi Pippin," Kaleb said with a smile. He hadn't expected to make a friend this afternoon, so it was a plus. "Here," he said, offering the boy the branch of lilacs. "I brought them from my backyard; they'll probably need water soon." He was happy to have met someone who liked flowers. "Hi, Pippin's mom," he added, looking to the woman.
Well, he assumed she was Pippin's mom. If she wasn't, then he'd apologize and offer her a flower. "You guys having a picnic? Cool." Last picnic he'd been to hadn't been exactly pleasant. There had been too many girls present. Far too many.

Pippin took them with a joyful grin, "Thanks, I like 'em a lot." he nuzzled his nose into the purple lilacs and did his best not to sneeze since he sniffed up a bit of pollen.
"Well hello there~" 'Pippin's mom' said with a small laugh. The boy was cute, and he seemed nice. Pippin had nodded his head in response to the other boy, "Yeah, we're havin' a picnic." he said, looking up at his mother.
As if she could read his mind his mother spoke, "You can stay if you'd like, as long as your guardian doesn't mind. In fact, they could stay too even!" Celi offered, quite aware of the fact that there was enough to go around.
Pippin looked at the other with eager eyes, his shyness was beginning to fade a bit so the idea of someone to help clean up all of the food sounded a bit nice.

"Me too," Kaleb said with a smile. "I like giving them to people, especially." He paused, and glanced at Pippin's mother, his smile widening. "Really?" he asked in slight disbelief. He hadn't expected to be invited; he'd merely been curious. "My mom won't mind," he added. "She's always encouraging me to make new friends and stuf. She didn't come with me," he said as an afterthought.
"It's really nice of you to invite me, though." He sat down next to Pippin and gave the boy a smile. "So, what do you like to do?"

Celi was a bit surprised when Kaleb mentioned how his mother had not come to the park with him, but who was she to judge? "Go ahead, stay and eat then." she said in her normally cheerful tone as she gazed from the boy back to her own son.
Pippin thought for a moment, "Well, I like to learn stuff, and I really like rollercoasters. I like being read to and stuff too, and reading a little on my own." he nodded, as if confirming to himself that that really was what he liked to do. "How about you? What kinds of things do you like to do?" he asked in polite return.

Kaleb of course, hadn't explained that they only lived a few blocks away from the park, and that she would have normally joined him for the walk, but she was babysitting a sick nephew. "Thank you," he said gratefully. "Maybe sometime you can come over for dinner. Mom wouldn't mind, I bet. She loves meeting new people."
Kaleb paused and nodded at Pippin. "I like to learn things too," he said. "But I've never been on a rollercoaster. I like to read and write, and I like making things to give to people. I like gardening," he added as an afterthought.

Celi smiled, obviously delighted that the young child had chosen to stay, "Well then, eat whatever you wish! Don't be shy!" she giggled, passing Kaleb a bottle of juice for him to drink, "We have other drinks too." she offered, in case the boy wasn't a fan of juice.
Pippin nodded in understanding as he picked up a rather perfect looking apple and took a small nibble before continuing, "I bet you'll go on one sometime. I wish I could make stuff, but I'm no good at that really." he admitted shyly, taking another bite to hide his slight embarrassment. "I'm not really artistic I guess. S'good that you like it though."
