How does your practice view the phases of the moon? What does it mean when the moon is a half moon, a crescent, gibbous? How are waxing and waning relevant?

This topic is specifically on the phases and what they mean, but...

Other related topics:
Do you actively mark the phases of the moon?
Do you have a deity you honour who is directly related to the moon in some way?

I see the lunar cycle as the mystics journey, starting with the New Moon and the mystic begins as a seeker of the Divine Wisdom, continuing to bask (waxing) in the Light until the seeker is filled with that Sacred Knowledge (Full Moon). The Seeker is now a teacher and shares with others all that has been gained by teaching (waning) until the teacher must become the student once more (back to the New Moon). My devotion in this ritual goes to my God and focuses on one of his specific emanations, the Risen or Upper Sophia.

Your religion is weird xd Man it's complicated. Don't you get confused? I suppose you can always go back in your head to that moment of gnosis and remember how it made sense and there weren't all these terms and words.

So the phases are important because of the changing...ness? The pattern of the changing phases is the relevant element for your faith, as much as the phases themselves?

LOL. I do get confused very very often but I do take a step back when I do start getting confused. It's pretty much a WIP type of religion, the framework is there but the details are fuzzy and shaping it to fit within a modern context without going mad is half the fun.

It's because of what the moon represents. The Moon to me symbolizes hidden knowledge becoming revealed. As long as I am here, no matter how much I learn there will always be more to learn and over time one can forget basic things through the process. It's a cyclical progression of being a student and becoming a teacher, then teaching what you know and becoming receptive again for something new, i.e becoming a student once again.

It's time I put my own thoughts down xd

I think it is not whether the moon is waxing or waning that matters. I know I differ from many in thinking that. To me it's the size and the shape of the moon now, in the moment, that is relevant, not what it will be tomorrow or three days hence.

After all, the moon herself is always the same; it is our perception that changes. A sliver of moon is not greatly different whether it will be smaller tomorrow or larger; it is still a sliver of moon. Rites should be keyed to how she appears, rather than what process she is performing.

I had this thought first while looking at a crescent moon. It's why I asked the question; I think too long I've been looking at only one perspective and I'm glad to have a new one. What are your thoughts?

Personally I think it would be a combination of both. While the moon does appear to be fixed in one phase in the sky the phase and shadow cast by the earth is still moving.

Thus if you are doing a ritual or magical workings that requires a quarter moon, I would think you would want to factor in the movement too since that quarter is going to still be moving to New Moon or Half Moon, even if you notice it or not, during the course of the night. Now this might be completely irrelevant to a ritual or magical working but if one is experimenting with a new ritual or spell that requires the moon in a particular position, I would think that factor might want to be accounted for to see whether the movement is irrelevant or not.
