Tainn was alone. Always alone, it seemed. Ever since that day when she had failed in her duty. A sign of it still hung about her neck. That blue ribbon. The bell that still jingled merrily as she moved - sometimes a hindrance, mostly a comfort.
She could have rid herself of it the moment her duty had ended but she could not bear to part with it. She had worn it since her puphood and to leave it behind now would be to leave behind her past and those good memories that kept her going through all of this sorrow.
She had slept the past couple of days in a damp cave covered in moss and now her fur smelt of that same damp. Her bones felt cold and she ached. It was time to move on. Find a better den, better hunting grounds. Pickings here had been poor and if she didn't hunt soon she was going to fade so much that soon she'd be beyond such an act.
The silver wolf turned her stump of an ear back to listen over her shoulder as she emerged into the sunshine, taking pleasure of the dappled warmth across the length of her shining, silver back. Ahead of her a hare took flight, bounding across the grass and disappearing from sight. No matter. She'd find something else. She always did. Even still, as she looked across the stretch of open land there was nothing. No deer. No rabbit. No grounded birds yet to take flight.
Nothing.
A distant howl sounded, miles out and she lifted both ears to listen. Despite her injury she could ear perfectly, the wound purely aesthetic.
A pack wolf or a lone wolf? It was hard to tell, but even still she felt the need to return the call.
She strengthened her stance and raised her muzzle, howling out the song so that it heightened in volume as she lifted the notes to the sky. Tainn loved to sing, whether it was to herself or others. Somehow she felt less alone when she knew that maybe others could here her, no matter how far away they were.

He stretched as he exited the pack territory. Swayambhu had been in the pack every day for over three months now, not getting out to hunt because he feared his new pups would run off and get hurt. Who knew the loner would actually care so deeply for something he didn't know about until they were dropped off three months ago? Hell, the were only a few weeks old when they were brought to him. "These are yours now. They can eat tender meat." The she wolf had said to him, nudging the two pups ahead. "Jaya, Lalita. They're your burden now. Useless creatures." Then he watched as Atai walked off without so much as a goodbye to her pups."She always was cold," Sway muttered to himself. His ears and head suddenly turned as he heard a howl far in the distance, and an answering one not to far. His blood sang to answer it. All wolves blood did. He threw his head back and gave a deep, mighty answer in turn, his electric blue eyes closing as he did. There was a female's song mixed with his own; matching near perfectly. Almost blending into one voice that would carry on to the first singer. He wanted to find her. That had never happened before.

And another voice joined hers, not the first howl that had prompted her singing, but the voice of another who had joined in with the song. It lightened her heart and she paused her note to turn her head and locate the direction in which it came from.
Judging by the note of it, the other wolf - a male, she believed - was not too far away. Perhaps just across the open land? She wondered whether he would mind a bit of company? Wondered whether he - like her - was lost for a purpose, wandering these beautiful yet unforgiving lands just as she.
Or...could it be that she had just gotten too close to pack lands and, if she approached, she would be chased off or injured...or worse.
She lifted her head, gave a string of short, loud barks, and loped off across the open land, her head and tail high so as to make herself seem bigger, should the other wolf wish to attack her. It was risky but what was life without a little risk?

And he found her. Well, they found each other. It seemed as if the wolfess had the same idea as he did; finding their match in voice. His cool blue eyes looked her over, taking in her mangled ear, the thing dangling about her neck, and her colors. She even made herself look bigger, trying to intimidate him. But he shook his head at that and sat. His stance would show her that Sway wasn't her enemy. No, he was intrigued by her. Their voices joined as if they'd been singing together their whole lives.
Without a word, he threw his head back and howled again, long and loud. Would she answer it again? Would he have that fleeting joy of song?
