I just got a trumpet to practice over the summer because I've been dying to play one. Since i got it (which was about 6 hours ago) I can get sound and a note but it doesn't sound good. I looked up the fingerings and i got some but then my mouth cramps up and the note goes sour. I'm so lame at the trumpet. I play the flute and the saxaphone but i don't think those techniques are going to help me... Do you have advise on how to play better? tips? hints? sweatdrop did i mention i have brace?

Since u got it like six hours ago most professional trumpet players wouldn't expect u to have a good sound rite away. All u could do is keep practicing, make sure your lips are places correctly, and practice, practice, practice. It doesn't matter if u have braces either.

I agree with the person above me. With only 6 hours (Probably more now) most people wont expect a lot. All i can say is practice practice practice, And with the Braces thing i guess the only time you will have troubles is either when you get them tightened or taken off but still then, its just minor things and will usually go away after a few warm ups

Make sure you can buzz with and without the mouthpiece first. It's one of the most important things when playing any brass instrument. Buzzing should almost come naturally.
Take big, full breaths through your diaphragm and blow a steady stream of air!
Not to mention posture is a big thing too. :B

Trust me, your not going to learn the trumpet right away. I'm going to join marching band, and the conductor said he was going to stick me with a trumpet. (AHHHH.) So I'm going to have to learn trumpet like you. Btw, I play flute and oboe, so the trumpet isn't going to be a walk in the park. Just keep trying, and you'll get it eventually. Good luck! (I'll update this thread when I get my trumpet, okay?) heart
