Although there are obviously plenty of worse places (Somalia, anyone?), for a "civilized" country, there are still some pretty horrible people.
The community varies greatly upon the exact location, really. But overall, too many people just tend to not care much about others.
Also, corporations.

Yep, China's got a point there.
There are too many folks too concered with making other people's lives miserable, probably because they had horrible childhoods because of other people who were treated like that.
It's a vicious cycle really.
