There's a perfectly logical reason why the very notion of calling Meiling "China" instead of "Chuugoku" annoys the hell out of me.

Japanese fans call her "Chuugoku".

Therefore, it makes perfect sense to call her that as well.

You are implying Japanese fan-made material is more canon than Western content. Thus, your logic is flawed.

They're just fanon terms. None of them is more tr00 than other; or, as some annoying fans would say, they're all the same bullshit. Besides, what do you do then with characters that are most of the time called correctly by non-Japanese fans... but incorrectly by Nips? Do you pronunce Letty's name /'ɽetei/ then, even though her name was meant to be of foreign origin? (after all, it's written in katakana for a reason)

I wasn't saying Japanese fan names are more canon, I was simply saying that it doesn't make sense to create or use new names/terms if the fanbase in the original country has it's own already. I have the same issue with Haruhi genderswap fans.

And it depends on the name. If I know the origin, I pronounce it the way it's pronounced in that language some of the time. If I don't, I pronounce it the way the Japanese do.

But I guess I could start pronouncing Letty as Letei.

As if I care whether people approve or disapprove of me using the Japanese terminology for Japanese things in English forums... stare

I do it anyway even if people DO complain.

But there are situations where it's not version difference, but simply translation. Like Chugoku actually meaning China, not a different version.

I know what Chuugoku means, I still use that term because Japanese fans use it.

I would not be willing to call Toki's Hokuto Ujou Hagan Ken the "Jesus Beam" if it had a Japanese nickname.

The only thing I find sensless is using the Japanese version of an exact translation...while speaking English. China doesn't actually have anything to do with Touhou, as it's a real country, so if you say Chuugoku instead, you might as well replace the rest of the sentence as well. Of course, then most of us wouldn't understand it...

In fact, we might as well call it Nihonga, right?

Wait, what? Either my brain hates me right now, or...something. Well whatever the last part was that I was thinking of, I was just talking about the Japanese language. Something weird happened...
