Do you believe in spiritual gifts?
  Yes, I've got a bunch!
  Yes, but I'm without.
  Eh, I'm undecided.
  Nah; that stuff's out-of-date.
No! This is mocking the Holy Spirit!

All the Spiritual Gifts are supposed to be used for edification, exhortation or comfort.

Maybe our resident language guru Bait, or someone else would like to take a stab at what those 3 words mean according to the Bible.
"Language guru"? I think Kenshin or Chocobo might be better suited to that label; I'm naught but a humble wordsmith.

Still, I'll give it a shot.

Edification ... non-Biblically, it's literally "building up", like "edifice". And I think it's from Latin facere, meaning "to do" or "to make". Biblically, I would expect much the same meaning, but of a spiritual slant.

Exhortation ... basically, "urge". A call to action.

Comfort ... same thing it means anywhere else, I'd expect.

So all of these gifts are not meant for ourselves, the are meant to be used in the ministry of others.

They are meant to build our brothers and sisters up
They are meant to urge people (often this is seen as an urge towards right behavior or to walk in ones calling/gift)
They are meant to bring comfort to those who are hurting and/or in need.

The next set of gifts is the 3 power gifts
They are gifts that do something that do something

The gift of faith-we are all given a measure of faith, but this is over and above this....and this is not the faith that we need for salvation, use in prayer, or see as the fruit of the Spirit. This is an extraordinary faith inspite of what one sees in the natural. It is given for a very specific purpose. It is the kind of faith that moves mountains! This is the greatest of all the power gifts in that it allows the believer to receive miracles. For instance if someone prays over you and you are of the mindset "maybe this will help," or "maybe God will want to help" you are not going to get that miracle without the faith to believe that it is yours. This gift gives you that faith. Maybe you have been diagnosed with Cancer and every sign and word spoken around you says you don't have much time. This gift allows you to say in the face of those odds "I know that God wants to heal me, just watch.)

The working of miraclesThis gift is much the same as the above only in this case the extraordinary faith allows one to work/or give miracles to another.

[the gifts of HealingsThis gift does not work alongside a Dr. or through a Dr. (unless of course he/she has the gift of healing.) It is completely apart from natural or medicinal healing and the healing does not occur over a period of time it is instantanious . When someone uses this gift -One minute you are paralyzed the next you are walking.

Quite often the 3 gifts listed above are used in conjuction to one another.

utterance gifts

Prophesy The ability to see and report about future events without looking at natural predictors. True prophesy always comes to pass. In most cases it is meant for future events, not what is going to happen tomorrow.

Diverse kinds of tongues-this kind of tonges can be unknown languages but usually it is a prophetic voice like prophesy, but it is spoken in an unknown language, and in need of interpretation to be understood. It works together or alongside the gifts of Interpretation.

gift of interpretation the ability to understand words (usually prophetic) spoken in an unknown language.

Sometimes the gift of tongues and interpretation are worked by the same person through the power of the spirit.

We as believers filled with the Holy Spirit can operate in any and all of the Spiritual Gifts, if the Holy Spirit so directs, but we generally have one or two that are the predominate ones He operates through us.

None of the Gifts mentioned above can be worked by your own natural ability or your own will. The Holy Spirit must be the force behind them. In other words you can't say for instance "since I have the gift of healing I will just go to the hospital and make everyone there better. It doesn't work that way. Now if God says to you go to John Smith in room 206, tou can be sure that John (through the Holy Spirit and you as the condiut) has a miracle headed his way.

Each and every one of these gifts is to be used to glorify Jesus, not you! When you start operating with power in your ministry, it is very easy to get caught up in pride, and it is something you have to battle against every day. The minute you start saying things like "I healed" or"Did you see that man come out of the wheelchair after I layed hand on him." you are in trouble and the Holy Spirit will stop using you.

Bait has repeatedly mentioned that there might be other gifts not listed here (and there are) does anyone know what those might be?

I think, as a pentecostal myself, speaking in tongues is very miss understood. There is a difference between speaking Gods word (prophecy) in tongues (requiring translation) and the more common baptism through the Holy Spirit. This is where the confusion begins. When you are filled with the Spirit and begin to pray in tongues you are not meant to be translated. You are personally talking to God. No one else is expected to understand you and I think that is where some of the confusion comes from.
Romans 8:26,27 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God's will.

A new voice! Hallelujah! *Tosses confetti.* Come on, anybody else? Anybody want to maybe tackle Deidra's question? C'mon, folks, I already gave the answer a few pages ago ...

*Listens to crickets chirp.*
