what does it take to join a temple? are there any special requirements?

Depends on the temple, really. Some have very rigorous standards that say things like 'you need to have studied with us for 10 years, have no marriage family, have spent a year in silence, etc', others will take anyone the abbot sees as being devoted enough, in his own eyes. You'd have to ask requirements of whatever temple you were thinking of joining.
All of them will have a code of discipline you have to live up to once you do join, though - what that equals is a lot of rules and regs for everyday living and practice. 3nodding
