Rest days were few and far between for busy Candidates. Hence why Soldekai was intending to make the most of his. Admittedly, he liked the Candidate life -- while the individual chores required little more than manual effort, the rotating schedule made it more tolerable. He didn't think he'd be able to stand numbweed duty every day for a Turn, for instance, but once a sevenday mixed up with kitchen duty and changing glows and all the other chores... Well, it kept things from getting too monotonous.
And then there were days like this one, where he had the afternoon off. He'd changed into his lightest tunic and trousers and bolted on down to the beach as soon as he'd finished his last chore 'til evening. He hadn't expected the breeze coming off the water to be quite so chilly, but the bright, warm sunshine balanced it out, making the temperature bracing rather than unpleasant.
The lanky Candidate boy kicked off his shoes, and in a moment of childlike exuberance bolted splashing into the surf. Wet sand on bare feet, the roar of the waves... The Hold that he'd grown up in hadn't been on the water. It wasn't like Malvren, where you could come and see the sea any time you liked. Even after a Turn here, it was still a novelty to him.

Safira lay on the beach, letting the sun soak into her sore muscles. The chores she had now weren't bad, but they did make her grateful for her bed at night. Even so, she knew her work would increase exponentially if she Impressed, but she also knew that once she felt that connection with her very own dragon, she wouldn't care. It would be a labor of love. For now, she savored rest days when she could come to the beach or make the climb to watch the dragons.
She'd almost dozed off when she heard someone splash into the water. Sitting up, she smiled as he seemed to enjoy the water. She wasn't one for getting her clothes soaked, hating the way the fabric would cling to her skin after. But it was always fun to watch others enjoying the water.

He'd noticed the girl lying on the beach - there were usually a few other people out enjoying the sun, especially on days with pleasant weather. Other times, riders would come down to wash their dragons, though more often they would use the lake for that purpose; it seemed some dragons enjoyed the sandy beach for scrubbing themselves. Or perhaps they just liked the salt water... Ocean water was itchy when it dried on human skin, but then again, humans weren't too keen on being oiled, either, so obviously dragons had different ideas of what was comfortable. Still, you could usually recognize riders by A) their knots and B) the fact that they had a big honkin' beastie with them. Which meant that this girl was probably a fellow Candidate.
When he glanced back, though, she was sitting up and looking at him. He flashed her an apologetic smile and a wave, suddenly glad that he'd refrained from letting out an exultant whoop when he went splashing into the waves. He headed back out of the water, angling towards her. As he approached, the Candidate boy called, "Sorry! Did I wake you?"

Safira shook her head and smiled back, waving one hand as he approached. "N-no," she said softly, a little pink coloring her cheeks. "I wasn't sleeping. Just en-enjoying the warmth." She looked him over quickly, trying to determine what he was. Well, he didn't have a dragon with him, or at least not that she could see. It was hard to miss a dragon though, so he must either be a Candidate or something else the Weyr needed. "L-looked like you w-were having f-fun," she stammered with a smile. She hated that she stuttered like that, but she couldn't help it. Meeting new people made her nervous.
