Now that I have not one, but two sewing machines, I am wanting to make shoes. Nothing fancy - quite the opposite - I want barely there ballet flats. I think it'll be pretty easy, but I'm stumped on the sole. Any ideas? Have any of you made shoes?

I Made Ballet Flats

The soles are what always stopped me cold.

I have looked for new ones through the years, and if you search under shoe repair--soles or parts, you'll turn up something. I just never found what I was looking for!

If all you want to make is a pair (or 20) of simple flats, go to the resale shops and get shoes to tear up. Really. Simplest and cheapest thing to do.

I have made native American style boots for years, but all with simple leather soles. What I really need is a flexible sole like those on basic, plain tennis shoes. But not white, and dye-able.

When the girls were little, it was always little dresses-hats-handbags-hair stuff-decorated socks, but I never got any farther with the shoes than making shoestrings! It really didn't matter to them, they got to choose the fabric and they always loved whatever I made. Ah----those were the days! rofl

For the soles, I'm thinking of a cork and "burn out" tire tread. I have shoes from tire tread which are super comfy. And, if it works, it means that every road trip I can end up with new shoes. xD

I just need to figure out how to get it all together. It'll be something that stews in the back of my mind while I complete the other umpteen projects I have on the go.

They make special glues for shoe soles. You can usually get them from the shoe repair shops. Or read the labels on the Gorilla Glues---they work, depending upon the materials being glued.

And be careful with those belted radials! They will bite you!
