Souls are not, as we would think, a solid whole; rather, they are made up of dust particles, invisible to the
human eye. These particles, which have a strong attraction to us, move around us, somewhat similar to
electrons in orbit around the nucleus of an atom. As we go through life, we sometimes lose bits of our
souls to other people and other things; this loss is irreversible. However, even if they are separate from
us, on some subconscious level, we are still able to recognize their presence.
This is why, even though these particles of our souls are everywhere (even places we have never
been), hiding in the most obscure corners of life, we recognize them. They (along with the souls of other
people) make up all the things that we love, they are the reason why we sometimes think "This is
so me." Why we see bits of ourselves in other people.
In addition, our souls travel where we cannot, even into other worlds, where they take different forms.
We know of the existence of one particular world, named "Shi". In this world, the atmosphere is thick with
soul dust- and magic. On stormy nights when the moon is full, creatures that resemble puppies are born,
from a particle of soul-dust, moonlight, and a spark of magic.
------
It was the Chinese who first discovered the presence of soul-dust, and of the mysterious world of Shi. They
learned to call back to their own world the puppies born of their souls, through a magic incantation. Naturally,
they were intrigued.
Physically, the only thing that differentiated them from a normal dog was the fact that they had two tails. On
studying the puppies, however, it was found that they were able to communicate with their soul-linked humans
via telepathy. But this was not all.
These puppies were lucky. Or rather, their owners were. A man could walk across a busy road and not get hit.
A woman fell three stories and walked away without a scratch. It was too good to be true; but the prospect was
too appealing to ignore. They named these puppies Shou Fu Quan; Guardians of Fortune. Everyone wanted
one. Some wanted more than one. It was an illustrious business.
And then, the people grew greedy. They wanted more and more from their dogs; they were not content with
their luck. If something did not go as they wished, they took it out on their dogs, and it was only then that they
discovered the consequences of doing so.
Everything went wrong. Kingdoms crumbled. A plague spread across the land. People went to war and blood
was spilled. The more a dog had suffered by the hand of its owner, the worse his owner's luck would be. The
people, fearful and angry, destroyed all traces of the puppies and struggled to rebuild their nation. Word of
these puppies were banned; anyone who mentioned them would be immediately be executed.
But the way to summon a Guardian of Fortune was recorded, and hidden by a man who passed it on to his
descendents. They guarded it dutifully, generation after generation.
Until now, no one has tried to call one to our world...
