So I did this a while ago: http://publicclimb.wwf.ca/home/

A couple friends invited me to do it. I didn't really know what I was getting into so I just ran with it. The climb itself was pretty easy and I don't know what the fuss is about anymore.

But I'm so confused....

Sure, we raised a bunch of money for a good cause but this is at the cost of lots of tape/non-recyclable paper as wristbands, cardboard sheets to log your start and end times, more paper products and that weird plastic bulletin stuff for the stalls, etc. I saw volunteers carrying clear garbage bags full of waste when I went back down to the registration area for the coat check. I overheard a group of people who did it last year questioning the rationale behind offering pitas to climbers last year because the pitas were overpackaged.

Overall, do you think such fundraisers are effective? Do they ecologically cost more than necessary or is this more a case where the benefits exceed the cost?

Most likely the publicity is the pay off here.

I was not able to enter that website through my computer, is there another way I can get to it? I cannot answer your question unless I have facts about this organization.
